West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Josh Griffiths became Portsmouth's fourth signing of the summer window but with a fortnight to go until the start of the 2022/23 League One campaign, more new arrivals are needed if the South Coast club are going to challenge for promotion.

Pompey missed out on the top six last term but anything other than a play-off finish will likely be deemed a failure this term and could cost Danny Cowley his job.

The third tier is set to be very competitive again in 2022/23 and that means it is vital that the Fratton Park outfit make the most of the transfer market before the window closes at the start of September.

They don't have the sort of budget that some in the division do, which means that they may have to be a little creative.

With that in mind, here are eight current free agents that Portsmouth should definitely consider...

Striker is a problem area for Pompey, who are set to head into the new season without a senior number nine in Cowley's squad.

They'll likely want to address that via the loan of transfer markets to ensure they can get some real quality but they need to get bodies through the door.

With that in mind, Frazier Campbell should be someone they consider after his Huddersfield Town exit. He's 34 now but could be a useful squad player at the very least.

It's been a little while since Sam Winnall was last a 10-plus goal-a-season striker but the physical forward can still contribute at League One level.

He can be the focal point of the attack and bring other forwards into play, which could help the likes of Ronan Curtis and Marcus Harness in 2022/23.

Winnall is not the prolific striker Pompey need but he could help shoulder some of the responsibility in the final third.

Pompey would be taking a chance on Connor Wickham, who has struggled in recent EFL spells, but as a backup or rotation option the 29-year-old should be under consideration.

Signing the target man could be a cheap way to diversify Cowley's striking options while if they could get him back to his best, he could be a real force.

Again, this is not the reliable number nine signing they need to make but that doesn't mean it won't be one that pays off.

Marlon Pack has already joined the club this summer to bolster their midfield options but Carel Eiting is still a player Pompey should look at.

Things didn't work out for him at Huddersfield and he was released this summer but the Dutchman is just 24 and has the technical traits you'd expect from a player with Ajax pedigree.

He's lost his way a little but if Pompey can convince him to move to Fratton Park, he could prove to be a stunning signing. There's no guarantee it would work but it could be a high-reward addition.

The additions of Joe Rafferty and Zak Swanson have helped strengthen Cowley's defensive options but he could still do with a bit more cover at centre-back.

With that in mind, signing a seasoned performer like Michael Morrison on a free transfer may well be a wise move.

Morrison was released by Reading earlier this summer but comes with a huge amount of experience – with more than 500 combined appearances in League One and the Championship – and showed for the Royals last term that he can still contribute at a good level.

In a similar vein to Morrison, Sol Bamba is available after leaving Middlesbrough and could add more depth in central defence.

He doesn't have the legs he used to but Bamba is still solid and would be a fantastic dressing room influence.

Bamba knows a thing or two about winning promotion as well, which will be useful as Cowley and co. aim for a top six finish.

If he was good enough for Chris Wilder's Boro last term, he's good enough for League One.

Josh Griffiths' arrival at Fratton Park could well spell the end of Alex Bass' Pompey career as you feel the 23-year-old may leave in search of regular football elsewhere, giving the South Coast club a chance to cash in as he's in the final year of his deal.

Bass' exit would leave the club short of cover between the sticks and Jamal Blackman would help them solve that problem.

The 28-year-old left the Terriers earlier this season and would likely be open to dropping down into the third tier – particularly to a club with play-off ambitions.

Örjan Nyland is another free agent shot-stopper that Pompey should consider as a potential replacement for Bass, should he depart.

The 31-year-old will want to challenge Griffiths for the number one jersey, which should help the West Brom loanee raise his game.

A 38-cap Norway international, Nyland has experience with the likes of Aston Villa, AFC Bournemouth, and Reading so would at the least be a good player to have around the squad heading into next term.

It would be quite the coup were Portsmouth to bring in Yoann Barbet this summer.

The Frenchman's QPR exit was something of a surprise given he's been a regular fixture in their backline in recent years and there's no denying he's still a Championship-level player.

But the 29-year-old is still clubless and should certainly be someone that Pompey consider as they prepare for the new League One season.

You have to feel he'd quickly cement a place in the starting XI.
