Norwich City experienced a similar campaign when back in the Premier League.

After promotion from the Championship, there was hope that the club could finally shake their yo-yo reputation, but they, along with Watford, failed to retain top-flight status after going up.

Nevertheless, you would expect the Canaries to be right up there again challenging at the sharp end of the division this upcoming season.

They have a very talented squad at this level and a manager in Dean Smith that has won promotion from the division before.

All of the signs point to another strong campaign, then, however, transfer activity at Carrow Road has been rather quiet.

So far, for example, the only business done by the club in terms of incomings is signing Isaac Hayden from Newcastle United on a loan deal.

With a stacked squad and the best free agents having been snapped up at this stage, we tasked ourselves with coming up with eight free agents, that are still available, that Norwich should potentially consider this summer.

Some depend on outgoings, but here is what we came up with.

With just four senior central defenders on the books at present, the centre of defence is certainly an area that Norwich could perhaps do with some depth in.

As such, one player that could be a solid pick up in the free agent market is Gary Cahill.

Recently released by Bournemouth, despite now being 36-years-old, the central defender showed last season that he still has a year or two left in the tank.

He was a regular in the first half of the campaign for the Cherries, and for a club like Norwich competing at the sharp end of the division, he could offer depth and great competition for places

Another centre-back that Norwich should perhaps consider this summer is Naby Sarr.

Arguably one of the better centre-back options still available on a free this summer, Sarr is an experienced player at Championship level by now, and played when it mattered for most at Huddersfield last campaign despite making just 25 appearances.

He probably wouldn't command a start, but with a packed Championship schedule, he would certainly be a player that could come in and start the odd game here or there that you could rely on.

If Gary Cahill and Naby Sarr aren't to Dean Smith's fancy, Yoann Barbet could be another option to consider this summer.

Ben Gibson is the only central defender the club currently have on the books that is left footed, and Barbet could remedy that.

Recently released by QPR, he was a key player at Loftus Road in recent seasons.

On a free transfer, there isn't much better out there at Championship level at the moment.

With speculation over the future of Max Aarons, right-back could be another area the club potentially have to look at this summer.

As such, bringing in someone like Cyrus Christie on a free could make sense.

Bali Mumba has now exited the club and headed to Plymouth Argyle on loan, which will be a great experience for him.

However, that leaves Sam Byram as the only right-back at the club were Aarons to depart Carrow Road in the coming months.

It would be a blow to lose Aarons, with neither Byram or Christie as good, however, on a free, Christie is at least an experienced Championship operator.

For similar reasons, Tommy Smith could perhaps be worth considering at right-back, too - although obviously only one would come in, if Aarons leaves.

Smith is a full-back that can contribute going forwards, evidenced by his 30 Championship assists in his career to date.

He's a player that has thrived at Championship level previously, and has experience of winning promotion when he was at Huddersfield back in 2016/17.

On a free transfer, there's a lot to like, if the club have to go searching for a right back this summer.

Another player that the club could perhaps consider, going overseas this time, is Jean-Paul Boetus.

This would be an ambitious one, but Boetus was linked with the Canaries back in May, and, is available on a free transfer after recently leaving Mainz.

At 28-years-old he is in the prime of his career, and he could see a move to Carrow Road as a gateway to Premier League football.

Available to play on the left, right and centrally in midfield, Boetus would be great pick up if the club could pull this one off.

Another right-back that is currently available on a free transfer worth considering as a back up is former Derby County defender Nathan Byrne.

Having been a regular in the Championship over the last four seasons, the 30-year-old is an experienced head at this level, and has showed his attacking threat from right-back and right-wing-back, too.

In 2019/20, Byrne particularly thrived, registering eight assists when at Wigan as they were relegated from the division due to a points deduction the club had suffered.

Last but not least, Ryan Nyambe could be a real quality addition worth considering.

Again, this one would pertain on Max Aarons departing, but Nyambe is a player that could come in and be a starter for Dean Smith's side and is certainly the pick of the bunch on this list in terms of full-backs.

Able to play as a traditional full-back and at wing-back, he is a player that gives you options and flexibility in terms of system, and at 24-years-old, still has further development to come before hitting his peak.

There is already somewhat of a transfer battle going on for the player, but this would be a low-key shrewd addition for Norwich and definitely one worth considering if Max Aarons is going to depart.
