Whichever way you look at it, Cardiff City’s 2021/22 campaign was a disappointing one.

After a fifth-place Championship finish in 2019/20, and an eighth place one in 2020/21, the Bluebirds fell well down the order in 2021/22, ending the season sitting 18th in the standings.

The club have wasted no time this summer in looking to right their wrongs from last term, though, being very active in the transfer market.

The Bluebirds have an exciting number of young talents, and the hope will be that this summer’s additions can add to and complement them going forwards.

At the time of writing, Steve Morison’s side have made over ten signings so far this window, with the likes of Romaine Sawyers, Andy Rinomhota and Callum O’Dowda the most notable names.

Given the club have already made the most of the free agent market this window, we thought we’d pick out a further eight players the club could consider over the next few weeks.

Whilst some of the top names have already been snapped up, there are still some available that could do a job for Steve Morison’s side.

One area that Cardiff City are certainly looking light in is the centre of defence.

As such, there are a number of free agents out there that could do a job for the club this upcoming campaign.

One of these is Gary Cahill - if the club could agree a reasonable deal.

There is no denying that the 36-year-old is in the final stages of his career, but he showed at AFC Bournemouth last campaign that he can still contribute in some capacity at this level.

If the Bluebirds could agree a reasonable deal with the experienced defender, this would potentially be a really shrewd pick up.

Another central defender who is a free agent that could be a decent pick up for the Bluebirds is Naby Sarr.

Sarr recently departed Huddersfield and showed last campaign that he is a good operator at Championship level in a team competing at the sharp end of the division.

Indeed, although he only featured 21 times in the Championship last term, he played all three of the Terriers play-off matches and was in when it mattered.

With 100 Championship appearances to his name, the Senegalese central defender would compete for and offer great competition for a starting place in the Cardiff defence.

A name more than familiar to Cardiff fans, perhaps a reunion with former Bluebird Sol Bamba could be an option worth considering this summer.

The 37-year-old, despite his age, played 29 times for Boro last term and you can’t help but feel an experienced head like his in what was a relatively young side last season could be of great benefit.

If the Bluebirds could offer Bamba some sort of player/coaching role, for example, it could be a move that makes sense for both parties.

Whether or not the club or Bamba would be interested in a reunion remains to be seen.

Yoann Barbet is another free agent addition that Cardiff could target to add numbers to their backline this summer.

QPR said that talks were ongoing with the player ahead of his contract expiring, but we got the announcement last month that the player would be departing the club at the end of his deal and as such, he is now a free agent.

Barbet has been a key part of the QPR side over the last two seasons and at 29-years-old, still has plenty of years ahead of him, unlike some of the other names on this list.

It would be a great signing for the Bluebirds and certainly one you feel could be within their reach.

Finally moving on from the central defenders, former Coventry City player Jodi Jones is another that the Bluebirds could target this summer.

Jones plays on the right wing, an area Cardiff could do with a back up in.

At present, the club have Gavin Whyte in the position, and Isaak Davies can play there, too, but I think Jones could be a low risk, low cost depth option.

Given how little football he has played in recent seasons, the 24-year-old would likely jump at the chance of a role at a Championship club.

Perhaps, following the departure of James Collins, Lewis Grabban could be a free agent worth considering for Cardiff.

They are now very light in the striking department and Grabban is an experienced striker, with plenty still to offer.

He showed that last season at Forest, netting 12 times and registering four assists in his 32 Championship outings.

He is somebody capable of being a starter, but also providing strong competition from the bench should Cardiff dip into the market for a more luxurious forward.

This could be good business on a free.

If the Bluebirds wanted to be a bit more ambitious, Jeremie Bela could be an exciting option for Cardiff City to consider this summer.

The 29-year-old has played in a poor Birmingham City side over the last few years, but still managed to put in decent performances, and contribute with goals and assists.

Last term, for example, he scored twice and assisted five times. He has been more prolific earlier in his career, too.

With Callum O’Dowda having joined already this summer, the club would have to consider whether they wanted two players on the books that favour the left, but it would certainly be good competition for places.

Last but not least, giant forward Andy Carroll could be another player for Cardiff to consider this summer.

The 33-year-old had his doubters when he signed for Reading last season, but he showed for the Royals, and later for West Brom, that he can still be a threat at Championship level.

He certainly wouldn’t be a starter, but if you’re looking for someone that can come off the bench and have an impact, there aren’t many better you can find on a free this summer than Carroll.

It is certainly one for Steve Morison to consider.
