Vincent Kompany has taken charge at Burnley to signal a new era at the club for this season.

After a decade of Sean Dyche as manager of the first team squad, Kompany has now come into the role as his first in English football.

The former defender was previously manager in his native Belgium with Anderlecht, which was his first ever managerial position.

He has now taken over at the Clarets, where there has been a lot of squad turnover this summer as they embark on life in the Championship.

James Tarkowski, Ben Mee and Nick Pope have all departed this summer, with the likes of Nathan Collins and Maxwel Cornet also potentially on their way out of Turf Moor.

Scott Twine, Luke McNally and CJ Egan-Reilly have all arrived at the club as incoming signings as Kompany looks to shape his first team squad.

Here are eight free agents that Burnley should definitely consider in the remainder of the transfer window…

Cahill could offer Burnley the leadership and experience at the back that is now lacking in the squad.

The former Bournemouith and Chelsea defender is currently available as a free agent and should be considered by the Clarets.

Despite his age, he is still more than capable of competing at this level and could be of use to Kompany.

The loss of Mee, Tarkowski and possibly Collins also leaves a gap in the squad, which Cahill could potentially fill.

The full back was an excellent performer at Championship level last season for Blackburn Rovers.

With Connor Roberts also subject to transfer speculation from Wolves, there could also be a need to bring in a guaranteed starter into the team.

While McNally has arrived this summer as a potential option at full back, he is perhaps not ready to step into the side immediately.

That could leave a space open for someone of Nyambe’s quality, which would make him a solid addition to Kompany’s side.

The former Manchester City and Everton midfielder could be a very solid option for Burnley next season.

He will know the Burnley manager well having played together at City, which could help Kompany having a dependable second hand man on the pitch that he can trust.

Delph is also a vocal member of the dressing room which should help keep standards high.

If he can be convinced to take the step down to the Championship, then this would be a really shrewd signing to make.

With the absence of Pope from the Burnley side, bringing in a goalkeeper will be seen as a necessary signing to make.

Smithies is a good option and available as a free agent who could take up a role between the sticks.

He has shown he is a dependable presence in goal at this level and would be an upgrade on existing options.

It may not be a long-term option, but he could bridge the gap to a young recruit coming in in the future while other areas of the pitch are prioritised this summer.

The midfielder would be a solid addition to the Burnley squad, with his Premier League experience making him a good fit as a squad option available to Kompany next season.

The German never quite asserted himself as a consistent starter with Norwich, but he could play a similar role as a rotation option in Kompany’s side.

Again, age isn’t quite on the 31-year old’s side, but he could be a good fit for the Belgian’s style of play.

The Ukraine international has been let go by West Ham, with the winger not quite capable of being a regular starter in David Moyes’ side.

But he has shown his true class in key moments for the Hammers last season, including scoring the winner in a gruelling Europa League tie against Sevilla.

Having this kind of electrifying force in attack could be really exciting for Burnley, so if he can be convinced to make the move then the Clarets should definitely pull the trigger.

Ruddy is available as a free agent following the conclusion of his contract with Wolves.

The 35-year old has stepped up to play a number of Premier League games in recent years and has shown he still has a very dependable set of hands.

It would absolutely be a short-term stop-gap signing, but he could settle into the team quickly and he could even go on to take a role as a solid second choice option in the future.

As a free agent, there are worse signings that Burnley could make.

Jeanvier is another option that could come into the team this summer as a free agent.

The former Brentford man could take up a place as a squad option at centre back.

He performed well in the Championship for the Bees during their rise up the second division before gaining promotion.

The Guinea international could certainly play that same kind of role for Kompany’s side, with his experience also giving him an edge over some of the younger talent currently in the squad.
