Following Russell Martin's first season in charge at Swansea City, the South Wales club will be striving to inflict pressure near the top end of the Championship when the new campaign gets underway at the end of July.

The Swans, who showed glimpses of promise during a campaign where they finished in 15th place, have built a strong enough platform to build upon for next season.

Martin was thrown in at the deep end at the start of the term, arriving just before the start of the season, meaning that last year was going to be completely and utterly about bedding in his ideas to his squad.

Possessing a strong core, with a few additions, Swansea could start to be ambitious about what the 2022/23 campaign might just hold for them.

Here, we take a look at eight Championship players that the Swans could target this summer to bolster a push for the play-offs...

Following promotion to the Championship, Rotherham United may face difficulty in keeping hold of some of their more integral players.

One player that has already been linked with a move to the Swansea.com Stadium, Chiedozie Ogbene, would be a shrewd addition, however the Swans would have to sell in order to be able to fund such a move.

The winger featured 45 times in the league for the Millers last season contributing with three goals and eight assists, whilst proving to perform at a constant high-level.

Continuing to cast eyes over Rotherham, 23-year-old Ben Wiles is someone who not just ready for the Championship now, but he has an incredibly high ceiling.

The midfielder, who has impressed in multiple positions for the Yorkshire club over the years, predominantly featured in central midfield last time out, scoring eight goals and assisting another seven in League One.

Possessing intelligence, great positioning, an excellent technical ability, and great desire, he is someone that would represent an investment opportunity.

Despite already possessing very strong midfield options in Matt Grimes and Flynn Downes, a free move for a player of Andy Rinomhota's quality is something that does not come around too often.

A complete midfielder, who ticks a large number of boxes at Championship level is currently likely to continue attracting transfer interest.

If Leeds start to pursue a move for Downes once more, Rinomhota could be an excellent option for Martin to consider, with the all-action midfielder able to thrive in a deeper role, or more advanced when required.

If Joel Piroe was to leave this summer, then Swansea could do a lot worse than making a move for the talented Lucas Joao.

Like his Reading teammate Rinomhota, he ticks a lot of boxes.

Possessing excellent levels of strength and athleticism, he is someone that thrives when it comes to his offensive battles.

He is also a great ball carrier, with a great dribbling ability, whilst he has proven to be an excellent scorer of goals in recent years.

Going back to the possibility of Leeds signing Downes, one option they could consider is Blackpool's Keshi Anderson.

Perhaps not the most exciting proposition, especially when considering the fact that they would likely generate a large enough fee for a potential Downes departure, but he is a player who has gone under the radar with his classy performances.

A central midfielder who can be deployed in a holding role, or even more advanced, his technical ability and vision makes him an excellent ball retainer.

If they do possess a sizeable enough budget this summer, or if they do sell someone with value, then Luton Town's James Bree could emerge as an option.

Adding another 'if' into the equation, if Cyrus Christie does not return, then the right-wing-back spot will be an area they will be looking to bolster.

The 24-year-old enjoyed an excellent campaign with the Hatters, with his crossing ability and defensive capabilities seeing him emerge as one of the club's top performers.

Having a contract that expires next summer, one player that the Swans could look to, and at a cut-price is Middlesbrough's left-wing-back Hayden Coulson.

It remains to be seen if he has a future at Middlesbrough, with Boro looking to be ambitious this summer and assemble a squad ready to challenge at the top end of the division.

Therefore, the Swans could look to agree a permanent move for the 23-year, further bolstering their wing-back options, whilst Coulson represents someone with a resale value if the move does not work out for one reason or another.

Should Swansea lose Piroe, and for a sizeable fee, one player they could look to invest a large proportion of that fee in would be Preston striker Emil Riis.

Possessing the physicality, technical ability, and intelligence to continue on an upward trajectory, it is certainly an ambitious one.

However, he is someone who promises to be a top level striker, and should the funds become available, it could be seen as an excellent investment opportunity.
