Championship outfit Luton Town will be hoping to strengthen their squad this summer ahead of what could be another very bright campaign at Kenilworth Road.

Narrowly missing out to Huddersfield Town in last month's play-off semi-final, Nathan Jones is continuing to build towards the Premier League and will be desperate to make the changes needed to level up his squad once again.

Amari'i Bell and Allan Campbell are two of last year's signings that played an integral part in guiding the Hatters to a top-six finish and Robert Snodgrass's arrival in February also provided them with a real boost going into the final few months of the campaign.

With these additions paying dividends and their strategy of low spending in recent years continuing to work, the club's hierarchy are unlikely to splash the cash this summer as they look to remain sustainable.

And with this in mind, we take a look at eight affordable additions the Hatters could make from fellow second-tier teams in the coming months.

With Simon Sluga no longer an option, Jed Steer returning to Aston Villa and Matt Ingram's loan spell ending, they need another shot-stopper (if Matt Macey doesn't join) to provide James Shea with competition in the goalkeeping department.

Smithies, who has been released on the expiration of his contract at Cardiff City, could be a decent option for the Hatters as a player with plenty of second-tier experience under his belt and a regular starter last term.

His wage demands could be an issue because the Bedfordshire side are unlikely to offer him a huge salary - but the possibility of competing at the right end of the table could be enough for the 32-year-old to sign on at Kenilworth Road.

He could be a good first-choice option and would certainly keep Shea on his toes if he was to link up with the second-tier side.

Hamer is another experienced option - and may be happy spending time on the bench considering he spent much of his time at Swansea City as a substitute behind the likes of Freddie Woodman and Andy Fisher.

He may be surplus to requirements in South Wales, being released this summer, but he would be a decent short-term asset for another second-tier side and Luton should be considering a move for him.

At 34, the shot-stopper isn't exactly at the peak of his career and may even accept a reasonably modest wage to remain in the second tier, so this could be a decent agreement for all parties.

Even if he doesn't start, it's unlikely he will kick up a stink and this will help to maintain harmony in the first-team squad at Kenilworth Road. And as an experienced keeper, he could help some of the younger shot-stoppers at the club.

Hull City could potentially cash in on Ingram during the summer despite their decision to trigger a one-year extension on his contract at the MKM Stadium.

They have done the same with Mallik Wilks and he's unlikely to be a huge part of Shota Arveladze's first-team plans during the 2022/23 campaign, so they may just be looking for a reasonable fee to provide them with extra funds to spend during the summer window.

Nathan Baxter is wanted back in East Yorkshire and if another shot-stopper comes in, that could provide Ingram with the opportunity to secure a move away after joining the Hatters on an emergency loan in the latter stages of last term.

Luton have been linked with a fresh move for him, so this is a deal that could materialise. It would be difficult to see the Tigers demanding a huge amount for him either.

With Kal Naismith departing the club, they may need another centre-back to come in and fill the void he has left and Flint could be a good option to have as an experienced second-tier player.

Set to depart Cardiff for free when his contract expires in less than a month, Luton can make an approach for his services now but may need to move quickly with Stoke City and Derby County thought to be interested in luring him to the Midlands.

The chance to play for a side that have their sights set on the top tier may be an attractive option for the 32-year-old so you could easily see the Hatters winning the race for his signature if did have him on their radar.

However, it's currently unclear whether they will be able to offer the centre-back a similar or better deal to the one the Potters may offer him. Born in Pinxton, he may fancy a return to the Midlands which would be bad news for Luton if they were to pursue him.

On paper, Holmes may not be the most attractive option for the Hatters considering he was part of a Reading side that had the worst defensive record in the division during the 2021/22 season.

However, the 22-year-old is a real asset when on top form and could be a useful addition in the middle or on the right of a back three, potentially operating more effectively in the former considering his slight lack of pace.

Considering his age though, he has plenty of potential and with more experience and good coaching under his belt, he could become a top-quality second-tier performer in the future.

And there's always the chance they could sell him on regardless of how well he does, with fellow Reading academy graduate Jack Stacey proving to be a real success at Kenilworth Road before his move to AFC Bournemouth.

If he was to leave the Select Car Leasing Stadium this summer when his contract expires, the Royals would be entitled to compensation but he shouldn't cost too much even when taking that into account.

Scoring 10 goals in 28 league appearances for Queens Park Rangers last term, he would be a great addition for a side like Luton who may be fighting for promotion once again next season.

Despite this impressive record, he has been released from Watford and is reportedly the subject of interest from Reading, Cardiff City and Birmingham City, all of whom finished in the bottom half of the table at the end of 2021/22.

If he's offered the chance to move to Luton, which is reasonably close to Watford, this is an opportunity he may take if he isn't too bothered about the prospect of joining a rival club.

With no need to relocate, the 30-year-old may even be prepared to accept a reasonably modest wage and that can only be good news for the Hatters.

Norwich City may be hesitant about loaning out a player to a potential promotion rival, but Idah needs game time and he won't be one of the first names on the teamsheet at Carrow Road.

With Harry Cornick and Elijah Adebayo at their disposal, he may not be a regular starter at Kenilworth Road either but he's likely to be heavily involved as a substitute and with injuries likely to creep in, he could get plenty of opportunities to start.

If it wasn't for his severe knee injury, he would have been more involved for the Canaries but considering he scored just once in 17 league appearances for them last season, a loan move away could be sanctioned.

Dean Smith's side could potentially benefit in the long term if he enjoys a successful temporary move during the 2022/23 season - and Luton should be in the queue if he's made available for a loan spell.

Someone who may be even more likely to move away during 2022/23 is Hugill, who endured an unsuccessful spell at West Bromwich Albion before making another temporary move to Cardiff City in January.

Whether he moves on may depend on the futures of Idah and Onel Hernandez - but there's every chance a move (either temporary or permanent) will be sanctioned if he doesn't manage to impress during pre-season.

Impressing when played alongside a strike partner at Cardiff, he could be a good option at Kenilworth Road if Jones sticks with two up top - and a loan deal could be a reasonably cheap one to negotiate.

At 30, the Hatters probably wouldn't be able to sell him on for much in the coming years if they did recruit him permanently this summer, so a temporary spell would be ideal.
