Barnsley will to refresh, regroup and go again in the summer, with the Tykes now set to play at least one season in League One again.

It wasn't that long ago that the club were in the top six and dreaming of a jump up to the Premier League. A season later, they've seen two managers come and go and have ended up in the bottom three and back in the third tier of English football.

There are several players out of contract this summer and there will be a few faces who will be attracting interest from teams higher up the pyramid now that they can only offer League One football.

With all those factors to consider then, here are eight players that could be on their way out of the club in the summer transfer window.

The first name that could be out of the exit door is Romal Palmer. The player has featured in 32 league games for Barnsley so far this season and for that reason, the Tykes will not want to let go of him in a hurry. He's been a first-team regular and it would be a blow to see him walk out of the exit door in the offseason. However, with his contract set to expire this summer, they need to tie him down to a new deal fast.

The issue is that the amount of playing time he has generated in the Championship this year may have caught the eye of other teams. If there is Championship interest in his services, then it may be hard to convince him to commit to the club in League One. If offers come in, then that could see him leave. With his fee possibly coming to nothing too, then it would be a steal for another club.

Aapo Halme is the next who could leave the club on a free transfer. His deal is the other contract at Barnsley that will come to an end when the season comes to a close and he might not be offered fresh terms, that would see him depart Oakwell in the summer. That's because, unlike Palmer, he has featured a lot less frequently and likely isn't in their plans. If he can't get into the team, then it could be time for him to leave.

Where he could end up is unclear. There aren't any reportedly interested teams, even with his deal set to expire, but with Barnsley probably not thinking about renewing his deal, he could just end up as a free agent for a while.

One name that Barnsley really won't want to let go of is Callum Styles, who has been a revelation for the club since breaking onto the scene for them back in 2019. He's gone on to make 119 appearances for the club with nine goals and his versatility and general ability has been invaluable to the club ever since.

This season, he's been one of the first names on the teamsheet. In a campaign that has disappointed for the club, he has been one of the bright sparks. 41 Championship games have led to three goals and one assist, despite him playing centrally, on the left flank and on the right too. The 22-year-old has done it all and has plenty of opportunity to get even better. That means there will be no shortage of interest in him this summer - and that could see him sold on.

Cauley Woodrow is another name that you wouldn't be surprised to see leave in the transfer window. Considering that there were sides sniffing around him back in January, you would expect that interest to come to the fore again this summer. It hasn't been his most productive campaign this season and he's spent some of the year injured but he is still capable of being a clinical finisher in the Championship.

Woodrow has proven he can be a reliable option in the second tier, so a drop down to the third tier will put him on the radar of plenty of Championship outfits. Considering his experience, they will know he is too good for League One - and will be willing to offer him an out that he may take this window.

If Barnsley are going to be raided for some of their best players this season and their players who can still do a job in the Championship, then Callum Brittain could also be on the list. He's been another mainstay, making 36 league appearances this season for the club, and despite plenty of players at Oakwell faltering he really hasn't.

Instead, he has stood above the rest and put in some shifts down that right flank. At 24-years-old, he is a good age too for any potential suitor to sign him at. He's had experience behind him now - 122 MK Dons appearances and a further 82 with Barnsley attest to that - but also has the time and ability to continue to improve.

William Hondermarck has only played in eight games since a permanent switch to the Tykes back at the beginning of the season, so he hasn't exactly had the kind of impact he would have liked. In fact, he's never really been able to get a frequent run of games anywhere in his career yet, managing not a single game for his previous team Norwich.

If you run the rule over his entire career it reads - eight Barnsley showings, three appearances on loan at Harrogate and 15 games for Drogheda United when his senior career began. He needs to get more gametime and experience under his belt soon but he doesn't appear to be in the Tykes plans yet. He's at a key age now though - he's 21-years-old - and will need to be sent out somewhere this summer if there are no plans for him to play.

Another youngster who will benefit from a short-term move away and some more playing time is David Bremang. He's 22-years-old, so slightly older than William Hondermarck but has played even less his teammate. With only one game for the club since joining halfway through this campaign, he needs to be playing more often than just sporadically.

He's already been shipped out once this year, on a loan to Guiseley. It gave him slightly more games than he would have managed at Oakwell but he will still need to go out and get more minutes somewhere else next season. That will enable him to continue to develop and to ease his way into first-team proceedings going forward.

Cameron Thompson is the last name that could be shown the door this summer, with the player potentially heading out on a loan deal. He came up through the ranks at Fulham but ended up with Barnsley and their first-team back in 2020. However, his gametime has been sparse and it's meant he has had to deal with playing time elsewhere instead.

This year, he has spent some time on loan with Darlington in search of those extra minutes. That allowed him to get more appearances than he has managed so far in his career to date, with seven games and one goal to his name. He will want to build on that going forward and whilst he might not be in the Barnsley plans, he could go out on a short-term basis again and get some more minutes during the summer window.
