It has been a simply unforgettable season for Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have been promoted to the Premier League and they have also won the Sky Bet Championship title this year.

Nuno Espirito Santo has come in and completely revived this Wolves team, replacing most of their players with new ones and leading them on a charge to the title in the second tier.

But right back Matt Doherty has remained a constant at Wolves over the past few years.

The once-capped Republic of Ireland international has been with Wolves since 2010, making over 200 appearances for the club in total during his stay in the West Midlands.

And he has been exceptionally good this year under Nuno.

Here, FLW shines a spotlight on his season so far and considers what the next step in his career could be.

Doherty has been solid at the back for Wolves, making 1.5 tackles per game on average, but he has been more impressive going forward.

Deployed in a right wing back position, the 26-year-old makes an average of nearly 50 passes per game at an impressive pass completion rate of just shy of 80%.

As well as this, Doherty has managed to grab four goals for himself, as well as laying on four goals for others with direct assists.

But can the impressive full back step up to the Premier League or should he look for a move this summer back to the Championship?

Well, there is no reason why he can't be a success in the top flight.

Doherty is good going forward and solid at the back, making him a useful all round wing back in Nuno's formation.

The Portuguese boss will probably bring in another player in Doherty's position to ensure that there is competition for places but you can expect the Irishman to get plenty of game time in the Premier League.

And if he continues to impress as he has been doing, he will get another much deserved Republic of Ireland call-up and hopefully establish himself as a regular in the national side.
