West Bromwich Albion will be looking to get back to winning ways in the Championship this weekend when they head to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City.

The Baggies, who are currently top of the second-tier standings, were held to a 2-2 draw by promotion rivals Nottingham Forest last Saturday in what turned out to be a thrilling affair at the Hawthorns.

Seemingly heading towards a crucial victory, West Brom were pegged back in the 91st minute by a stunning strike from Reds defender Matty Cash.

Although his side dominated proceedings during this particular fixture, it will be intriguing to see whether Baggies manager Slaven Bilic opts to make any changes to his side.

Whereas Nathan Ferguson is still sidelined, Kieran Gibbs is edging closer to make a return from injury having featured for the club's Under-23 side earlier this month.

When the former Arsenal man is fit enough to feature at senior level, he could present Bilic with somewhat of an ultimatum as Conor Townsend has emerged as the club's first-choice left-back in recent weeks.

Here, in our latest spotlight article, we assess whether Townsend has cemented his place as a starter for West Brom by taking a closer look at his statistics from this season...

After being forced to watch on from the sidelines during the opening months of the 2019/20 campaign due to form illustrated by Gibbs and Ferguson, Townsend has since gone on to play 1447 minutes worth of action for West Brom.

During the 20 appearances that he has made in all competitions, the defender has illustrated an unerring level of confidence whilst in possession of the ball which has led to him recording a pass success rate of 78.6% whilst also making 20 dribbles.

Given that Bilic encourages all of his players to express themselves, it could be argued that Townsend is the perfect fit for Croatian's tactical approach.

The former Scunthorpe United man has also demonstrated that he is more than capable of reading the game as he has made 78 interceptions this season.

Providing that he is able to build upon this particular statistic over the coming weeks, it would be somewhat of a shock if he doesn't keep his place in West Brom's side.

However, in order to fend off competition from Gibbs and Ferguson, it is imperative that Townsend makes significant improvements to other areas of his defensive repertoire.

As well only triumphing in 61.5% of his aerial duels, the 26-year-old has won just 59.5% of his overall defensive duels.

With West Brom fighting for a top-two finish, Townsend will undoubtedly have to step up his performance levels as a failure to do so may result in him being dropped to the substitutes bench as Bilic cannot afford to be carrying any passengers at this stage of the season.
