With the club in turmoil both on and off the pitch, Bolton Wanderers look destined for the drop after another disappointing campaign in the second tier.

Phil Parkinson's men look resigned to relegation, with the Trotters slumping to 23rd in the Sky Bet Championship table following a heavy 5-2 defeat to rivals Wigan Athletic last time out.

With the club winning just three out of their last 28 league games and sitting eight points adrift of safety, any hope of recreating last season's "Great Escape" this time around have surely been put to bed.

Parkinson's men showed real fight and togetherness to drag themselves out of the drop-zone, and they ultimately stayed up on the final day of last season at the expense of Burton Albion.

But the players who galvanised such a turnaround last season have failed to show up this time around - Sammy Ameobi played a crucial role in keeping the club in the Championship last term, stepping up to the plate in front of goal when Gary Madine departed for Cardiff City on deadline day.

The former Newcastle man clearly has talent in his locker, but is he good enough to stay in the Championship next season should his current club go down this term? We take a look at his stats from the season so far in our FLW Spotlight...

Ameobi, 26, has made 25 Championship appearances this season, returning just four league goals for Phil Parkinson’s side and registering three assists. He is currently the club's top scorer in the league, along with Josh Magennis.

Those strikes have come from an average of just 1.8 shots per game, with the towering winger completing an average of 2.1 successful dribbles per game too. His link-up play has also been impressive this season, accruing a pass success rate of 75.7%, after making an average of 27.1 passes per game this term.

You will struggle to find a player like Ameobi, who is so tall, yet carries the ball so well, but it does speak volumes that he is the club's joint-top goalscorer in the league with just four goals. This shows where Bolton really have struggled this term.

Of course, in a team fighting the drop, it will be hard to make an impact going forward - however, teams like Sunderland, who were fighting for their lives in the Championship last season and eventually finished bottom, still had a prolific goalscorer in Lewis Grabban on their books, albeit for half the season.

Ameobi will feel like he has done his best to try and save Wanderers from the drop this term, but his statistics don't make for pretty reading, and there are no excuses for such a lack of goals.
