73% pass success rate, 1.4 tackles a game: Aston Villa’s loan star under the microscope

It’s been a good season for Aston Villa so far with a number of their players impressing and performing well in the Championship.

Certainly, since the turn of the year things have really stepped up a gear and the Villans will be aiming to keep up the pressure on Cardiff City and even Wolves who don’t look as invincible as they once did.

Whilst Steve Bruce will have his focus on the players at the club right now, then, he’ll surely be monitoring those away on loan, too, and that’s what we’re doing with our latest FLW Spotlight subject – Gary Gardner:

The central midfielder is now 25-years-old but still finds himself perhaps slightly in limbo in terms of where his next step is going to head.

For sure, with Villa signing a number of midfield options in recent times, combined with the young stars coming through, his long-term spot at Villa Park looks under threat.

At Barnsley, then, he’s needed to use this season as a reminder of what he can do but, with the Tykes struggling for form, he’s been limited in being able to do so.

His pass success rate and tackles per game stats aren’t too bad, to be fair to him, but the amount of passes he makes and his assists suggest he’s not quite up to Villa’s standards.

Certainly, playing for a survival scrapping side brings those numbers down but, if he was good enough to really challenge for a Villa place, he’d surely need them to be higher than they are.
