On Monday, Jimmy Dunne, signed for Fleetwood Town on a season-long loan from Premier League side Burnley.

The defender had spent the second-half of last season at League One side Sunderland where he helped guide them to a fifth placed finish.

He is yet to make an appearance for his parent club, Burnley, but has made several for Republic of Ireland's Under-21 side.

Joey Barton has decided to bolster their defensive ranks having conceded eight goals in their opening six fixtures keeping just one clean sheet.

Talking to fleetwoodtownfc.com, Barton said: “Despite his young age, he has a lot of experience and knows the division having spent time at Sunderland last season.

“We’re sure he will add to what is a really exciting squad, and we look forward to seeing his qualities in a Fleetwood Town shirt.”

It's a fairly good signing for the Cod Army who have had a solid start to the season. Barton's side currently sit ninth in the league having scored the joint-4th most goals in the league.

Dunne comes in as a welcome defensive acquisition. The 21-year-old is a centre-back and has had valuable experience, with Fleetwood being his fifth loan move since 2017.

For the second-half of last season, the defender was on loan at Sunderland, where he helped them get to the play-off final. In the games that he played, he was impressive.

He won 73.3% of his defensive duels during his time at the Black Cats and became an important player over the backend of the season.

He was also effective when it came to defensive work such as interceptions and clearances. Dunne made an interception, on average, every 17 and a half minutes. Overall, he made 69 interceptions in his spell with Jack Ross' side. Alongside that, he made 60 clearances during his time in the North-East.

The youngster spent nine years at Manchester United during his youth career, before making the move to Burnley in 2016. He's slowly grown through the levels in regards to loan moves, and is now looking for a full season at this standard of football.

His passing accuracy makes him standout from other centre-backs in League One. At 73.9% his accuracy is at a good percentage if Joey Barton wants him to keep the ball on the floor.

The Cod Army have built a strong squad that could well challenge near the top end of League One and Dunne will provide much needed competition for Harry Souttar and Peter Clarke.
