Aston Villa rounded off what has been a sensational second half of the campaign, by winning promotion to the Premier League at Wembley on Monday afternoon.

The Villans’ bid for promotion had looked dead and buried in around March time, but a winning run of 10 games on the bounce had propelled them into the play-off spots, and leaving them in real contention of making a long-awaited return to the top-flight.

And on Monday, they achieved just that, easing past Derby County by two goals to nil, despite a nervy end to proceedings - Martyn Waghorn’s touch giving Derby a lifeline with 10 minutes left to play.

But in the end, goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn were enough for Dean Smith’s side, who will now be preparing for life in the Premier League after three gruelling years out of it.

In what was the biggest game of the season by a country mile, Villa midfielder McGinn really stepped up to the plate, and rounded off an exemplary performance with a goal to give Derby a real mountain to climb.

Here, we take a look at the Scot’s performance in further detail...

McGinn covered every blade of grass on Monday, and put in arguably his best display of the season in the most important game.

In the middle of the park, the Scotsman accrued a pass success rate of 72.2%, picking out three key passes and six long balls.

Going forward, the diminutive playmaker completed three dribbles, and in three shots he scored one goal, beating Kelle Roos to the ball and heading it over the indecisive goalkeeper.

If he keeps up these kind of performances in the Premier League, then Villa could face a real fight to keep hold of their star midfielder in the summer.

He has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the division, and will definitely go right to the top.
