Following an underwhelming 2018/19 season, Northampton Town have made a relatively impressive start to the current campaign under Keith Curle.

A recent string of positive results in League Two has allowed the Cobblers to climb to seventh in the standings, a position which would guarantee them a place in the play-offs next May.

Yet given that the fourth-tier is wide open this season, Northampton may be eyeing up the possibility of securing automatic promotion to League One next May.

In order to have the best chance of achieving this particular goal, it could be argued that Curle may need to strengthen his squad in the upcoming transfer window.

Keeping this in mind, here are SEVEN players who should be on Northampton's January wish-list...

Excellent during his brief spell with the Cobblers, Ricky Holmes helped the club win the League Two title in 2016 by providing 17 direct goal contributions.

Given that he has yet to make an appearance for Sheffield United this season, the winger may be tempted to move back to the PTS Academy Stadium on a temporary basis in January.

One of the stand-out performers in the National League this year, Jamie Reid has already scored 14 goals for Torquay United.

Although Northampton have the likes of Matt Smith, Andy Williams and Vadaine Oliver at their disposal, the 25-year-old forward could bring something different to their squad and so Curle should consider making a move for him in the upcoming transfer window.

Having been forced to watch on from the sidelines this season due to injury, Jodi Jones is now nearing a return to competitive action for Coventry City.

However, given that the Sky Blues can call upon the services of Jordan Shipley, Callum O'Hare and Gervane Kastaneer, they may allow the winger to leave on loan in January.

If this is indeed the case, Northampton should consider signing Jones as he has proven that he is more than capable of thriving at League Two level during his career.

One of Doncaster Rovers' stand-out performers last season, Herbie Kane provided 10 assists for his team-mates from central midfield in all competitions.

Since returning to Liverpool following the expiry of his loan deal at the Keepmoat Stadium, the 20-year-old has only made one appearance for Jurgen Klopp's side this year.

If Kane is made available for a loan deal during the upcoming transfer window, Northampton should go all out to secure his services as he could lead them back to the third-tier.

A product of Ipswich Town's youth academy, Armando Dobra has illustrated some real signs of promise in the cup competitions this season.

Having provided three assists for his team-mates, the winger will be determined to force his way into the Tractor Boys' starting eleven in the not too distant future.

However, it could be argued that Dobra may benefit from a temporary spell away from Portman Road and thus Northampton should consider bringing him in if he is available.

An exciting young forward, Kabongo Tshimanga has experienced a fantastic start to the season with National League side Boreham Wood.

Given that he has already scored 12 goals for the Wood this season, it is clear that he possesses a great deal of talent and so Northampton may find it beneficial to splash the cash on him in January.

Despite making 24 appearances for Ipswich last season, Toto Nsiala has struggled to make any inroads at Portman Road this year due to the form illustrated by the likes of Luke Chambers and James Wilson.

Having only featured on three occasions for the Tractor Boys, the defender may find it beneficial to leave the club on a temporary basis during the upcoming transfer window.

Given that Nsiala has performed to a high standard in the Championship during his career, Northampton would be pulling off somewhat of a coup by signing him.
