It was quite an afternoon for Middlesbrough as they recorded a surprise result against Tottenham Hotspur.

Few would have predicted that the Championship side could get anything against Jose Mourinho's side, but the 1-1 draw at the Riverside Stadium was not only a reality, but it was also thoroughly deserved.

The Teessiders played some good football in the first and got their reward when George Saville played Ashley Fletcher through on goal who converted with ease.

Lucas Moura got an equaliser for the Premier League giants, but Middlesbrough did enough to earn themselves a lucrative trip to the London side in the third round replay.

One man who really impressed was Paddy McNair.

The Northern Ireland international was given the role of playing in central defence and certainly didn't disappoint.

Let's take a look at the numbers behind his performance.

Paddy McNair is a midfielder by trade, but we all know he can do a job in defence if needed.

However many were surprised with just how well he coped against Tottenham.

Over the course of the 96 minutes that he played, McNair won two aerial duels and four interceptions as he came up against a pacy Spurs attack.

In  addition to that, McNair was an impressive seven defensive duels while also making seven clearances to ease the pressure on the Middlesbrough defence.

Add into that the eight recoveries made, and you start to see just how influential the 24-year-old was against Jose Mourinho's side.
