Birmingham City took a major step towards preserving their Championship status with a comeback 2-1 win over Sheffield United at St. Andrew's on Saturday.

The victory leaves Blues five points ahead of the relegation zone, although Barnsley do have a game in hand which will be played tomorrow night.

With the Tykes and rivals Bolton losing, it was the perfect Saturday for Garry Monk's men with Marc Roberts a surprising standout performer for the West Midlands side.

The centre-back has struggled to win a place in the team since Monk took over, however, Harlee Dean's red card against Wolves last week presented the 27-year old with a chance to start.

And, as our graphic shows, Roberts took that opportunity with both hands, putting in a dominant display to help secure a massive three points for the side.

Obviously, his goal, which brought Blues level was key, but defensively he was solid and strong throughout, which is why he is in the team.

The six clearances and seven aerial dues won highlight how he kept the Sheffield United attackers at bay, with David Stockdale not having too much to do on the whole.

When Dean was sent off last week, bringing a two game ban as it was his second dismissal of the season, many would've thought it was a major blow in Blues survival bid.

However, Roberts showed on Saturday that he has a lot to offer and will hope to continue that strong form against QPR on Saturday as Monk's men seek the win that could guarantee Championship football next season.
