Swansea showed intense interest in making a bid for Reading's Welsh international right back Chris Gunter a year ago, but the defender remained at the Madejski.

After all, the Berkshire outfit had just achieved a play-off spot and Jaap Stam was hopeful of repeating those heroics, maybe even going one better. Twelve months later, the Royals have not succeeded and Stam is long gone.

Will Premier League Swansea be back in for the one-time £3m man? His initial foray in the top flight wasn't a success at Spurs and, aside from 20 outings in 2012/12, he's never managed to achieve consistent top flight football.

He's now 28-years old, has the time come to say goodbye to Reading and head back to Wales for one last stab at the Premier League? FLW shines a spotlight on Chris Gunter.

The first thing to consider is Gunter's heritage. As he was born in Newport, South Wales, a Swansea move would be very much a return home. Reading might only be an hour and a half up the road from Newport, but there's nothing like moving home.

Is he a good fit for Swansea though? Once billed as an attacking full back, his stats suggest a change in his attributes over the last season.

With one assist and one goal he isn't the type to be bombing on all afternoon, overlapping wingers and creating goals. Maybe that is a reflection on Reading's season as much as Gunter's abilities, but he does seem to have become a more traditional right back.

He's played all 44 league games for Reading, something uncommon in this day and age. It shows a player at the peak of his abilities and his fitness so, if there's a big move to be had, he's never been in better shape to make it.

His tackle rate is impressive, 68.2% success, which points to a strong and committed defender always ready to put a foot in. When he does pick up the ball his pass completion rate is 72%, again a figure not to be taken lightly.

At five foot eleven, he can't be described as a tall player, yet he still wins 44.7% of his aerial duels. Those numbers all suggest he's very much a defensive right back, tackling, winning headers and playing the ball neatly forward for others to attack with.

The timing is just right, Swansea could do much worse than raid Reading for Gunter. If he's going to step up to the top flight, it really has to be now.
