Bristol City appear to be finding their feet in the Championship.

After starting the season with two losses and a draw, Lee Johnson’s side have won three consecutive games and have climbed to fourth in the league, just three points off the top.

The third of those came in a 3-1 victory over Hull City at the KCOM Stadium on Saturday.

Benik Afobe took the lead from the penalty spot for Bristol City four minutes before the break but Jarrod Bowen equalised for the hosts just three minutes later.

The visitors took the lead again in the 78th minute, when Reece Burke turned a Jack Hunt cross into his own net.

Afobe capped off the win moments later, popping up on the end of yet another Hunt cross to make it 3-1.

The Robins striker was the standout player Saturday and earned himself a place in the EFL Team of the Week – we put a spotlight on his performance to examine just how good it was.

Afobe has been Johnson’s first-choice striker since he joined the club from Stoke City on deadline day and it proved that way once again on Saturday, with the on-loan forward playing for the duration of the game.

Due to fitness concerns over Kasey Palmer, he started in a pair upfront alongside Famara Diedhiou, his main competition in the City squad, with Andreas Weimann dropping into the number 10 role.

That setup appeared to suit Afobe who had his most prolific game for the Robins yet, scoring twice.

The 26-year-old missed a couple of opportunities in his debut against Birmingham City and there may have been some questions raised in that game over his finishing. Afobe took some steps toward putting them to bed against Hull, as he finished the game with 100% shot accuracy.

With Diedhiou on the pitch, the Robins were always likely to play a more direct style of football with more long balls and Afobe showed he is a useful player in that system, winning 67% of his aerial duels–the highest of success rate from any of his appearances for the club so far.

One part of the striker’s game that will have been particularly pleasing for Johnson on Saturday is his interplay.

City like to play an expansive passing game and Afobe looked a settled part of that. The DR Congo international finished the game with an impressive passing accuracy of 83%, including a 100% success rate for passes to the final third and three-shot assists.

There is no denying that Afobe was a panicked addition after City saw Eddie Nketiah snub them in order to move to Leeds United on deadline day and there will have been concerns given his record for Stoke last season.

However, the early indications are that he is a smart addition to the squad and one that may become integral if he continues to produce performances like Saturday's.

Afobe's goals proved the difference on the weekend and Johnson will be hoping that continues to be the case moving forward.
