It was another frustrating weekend in the Sky Bet Championship for Barnsley, who fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

The Tykes would have been hurting after their late defeat to Yorkshire rivals Leeds United the week before, and were hoping to bounce back with a win against Sabri Lamouchi's side.

But despite dominating for large spells of the second-half, it was Forest who secured a narrow victory on their home turf - Ben Watson tapping home after a swift counter-attack in the 56th minute.

Barnsley had plenty of chances to level the scores, and after the game, Daniel Stendel admitted that it's "crazy" that they haven't managed to find the net in their last three outings.

Luke Thomas had the best of the chances for the visitors - the young winger forced two wonderful saves out of Brice Samba with two ferocious left-footed efforts.

Thomas was the goalscorer in the Tykes' only league win of the season so far - they emerged as 1-0 victors against Fulham on the opening day of the campaign.

Since their win over Scott Parker's side, Barnsley have failed to get out of first gear - but how has Thomas got on since making the move to Oakwell?

Here, we take a look at his season so far in further detail...

Thomas signed for Barnsley from Derby County in the summer, after impressing on loan in League One with Coventry City last season. He put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Oakwell - a big statement made by the Yorkshire club.

The 20-year-old has since made a total of nine appearances for Stendel's men - starting in every single one of their Championship games thus far, and making an extra appearance in the Carabao Cup against Carlisle.

Before we get into his statistics, it's important to establish where he has played for the Tykes. Stendel's preferred formation is a 4-2-3-1 system, and Thomas usually occupies the right flank, but the winger can also play on the left if needs be,

He opened his account for the Tykes in their opening day win over Fulham - dispossessing an opposition defender and cutting in on his favoured left-foot before slotting home.

Thomas is a fast, direct winger who loves to cut onto his left foot after coming in from the right. He has played a total of 762 minutes of football in all competitions this season, scoring one goal and failing to register an assist.

The latter will be disappointing for Thomas, who created plenty of goals for Coventry last season. This time around, he has accrued a pass success rate of 67.7%, with his role focused on bringing the likes of Mallik Wilks and Alex Mowatt into play.

The winger has also accrued a dribble success rate of 50% this season, perhaps suggesting that he is still adapting to the physical nature of the Championship.

Thomas also has a wicked left-foot on him, and so far this season, he has a hit 14 shots on target, which is an average of nearly 1.5 a game. He very nearly doubled his tally for the season at the weekend, but Samba was like a brick wall in goal for the Reds.

It's clear to see that Thomas is a winger who causes problems with his pace and direct running, and if he can improve on his end product, he could be a very important player for the Tykes this term.
