Blackburn Rovers are preparing for their Sky Bet Championship return after Tony Mowbray successfully guided his side to promotion last month.

Mowbray’s side looked impressive in League One, but will be under no illusions that their return to the Championship will be a difficult one and that their first task will be surviving.

The transfer window is going to be key at Ewood Park, with Mowbray knowing the need to add quality to what he’s already got.

One player who Blackburn could potentially cast an eye over is Luke Murphy, who is the latest feature of our FLW Spotlight:

Murphy has just completed a season-long loan with Burton Albion, with the midfielder part of Nigel Clough’s squad who were relegated last weekend.

The 28-year-old featured on 38 occasions for Burton over the course of the season, scoring one goal and registering two assists from central midfield.

Playing in a struggling side, Murphy was defensively sound, making an average of 1.8 clearances per game and 2.5 tackles per game.

In possession is where midfielders are usually judged, and Murphy finished the season with a pass success rate of 67.1%.

The Verdict

Murphy is a good player, but is extremely inconsistent.

When his side is playing well, he is often the man dictating play and capable of scoring goals.

What Murphy would bring is experience, after years with Leeds in the Championship and an 18-month loan spell at the Pirelli Stadium.

The 28-year-old’s stats might not make fantastic reading, but it is worth remembering who he has been playing for.

It could be a shrewd move from Mowbray to take Murphy to Lancashire.
