Borja Baston marked his return to the Swansea City starting line-up by heading home the leveller to spark his side's 2-1 comeback against Hull City on Saturday.

Swansea boss Steve Cooper handed the Spaniard his first start for the club in 950 days, following the departure of first-choice striker Oli McBurnie to Sheffield United on Friday afternoon.

Baston repaid Cooper's faith by looping home his header early in the second half, and this was then closely followed by Mike van der Hoorn's header to hand Swansea a precious opening day victory.

The Swans had been looking offload Baston earlier this summer, but chairman Trevor Birch has now admitted it is likely the club's former record signing will stay at the Liberty Stadium this season.

So, could Baston be the man to fill the void left by 24-goal man McBurnie? We dissect his performance against Hull...

Baston featured three times during Swansea's pre-season campaign, but he made his very first start since returning to the club in the Championship opener on Saturday. Given Swansea's lack of striking options, Baston played the full 96 minutes of Saturday's match which would have been a real fitness test given his lack of playing time of late.

The striker's 48th-minute effort was only his second goal for the club since he made his £15million move to South Wales in 2016. On Saturday, he was alert in the box to nod home Jay Fulton's flick after Nathan Dyer's initial cross and this finish showcased the extent of his goalscoring capabilities. It was a difficult finish with the ball coming at him with such pace from close range, but he adjusted well to loft the ball over George Long's head and into the net.

Baston had struggled to impose himself in the first half, but he very much grew into the game as it progressed. His total of three shots shows he was not afraid to try his luck on his Swansea return, but he will be aiming to improve this figure as he accustoms himself with life in the Championship. He will also be aiming to be more accurate with his passing when he next features, as his 63% success rate indicates there is room for improvement. The fact he only recorded one interception also suggests he can improve his match sharpness and ability to compete for the ball.

It is understandable that Baston was not entirely up with the pace following an uncertain summer, where it appeared at times that he had no future with the club. However, the fact he won just 29% of his duels means it would be a major risk if Swansea choose to lead the line with him for the season ahead. McBurnie thrived from being such a hard worker when leading the line, so the Swans now need someone who can be depended on to stage a serious battle with their opponents' defence. Baston's clever finish against Hull showed he can certainly benefit Swansea on the goalscoring front this term, but I think Cooper will be targeting another striker with Championship experience to compliment the Spaniard's skills.
