Sunderland have endured quite the fall over recent years, which has left the club stranded in League One and looking for a passage back through the Football League.

After falling out of the Premier League in 2016/17, Sunderland dropped straight through the trapdoor in the Championship and by the summer of 2018, were preparing for a season in League One.

Jack Ross failed to lead Sunderland back into the Championship last season, with Phil Parkinson now at the helm and looking to get things moving in the right direction.

Ultimately, Sunderland’s decline has been on the back of some serious mismanagement, which includes some questionable recruitment.

With that in mind, we take a look at SIX of the worst signings to pass through the Stadium of Light door…

There isn’t really anywhere else to start than former Everton and Man City midfielder, Jack Rodwell.

Rodwell was an expensive mistake at Sunderland and he was put in bad light during the first series of ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die’.

His name sends a shiver down the spine of those connected with Sunderland.

Camp is the current Birmingham City goalkeeper, but he had a spell at Sunderland in 2018.

The goalkeeper was part of the side that were relegated into League One, with his questionable goalkeeping making him a signing to forget.

Ndong’s spell as a Sunderland player coincides with the beginning of this decline through the Football League.

A club record signing at one point, but a player seen as an expensive mistake.

Not the worst player, but when you consider the finances behind the deal, it was a poor move.

The striker scored just one league goal in Sunderland colours and was a poor signing on the whole.

Perhaps the best thing Altidore did for Sunderland was carving the pathway for Jermaine Defoe to arrive.

Like many others, the defender was part of Sunderland’s decline from Premier League to League One.

Part of the squad that were relegated from the top-flight, Djilobodji moved out on loan as Sunderland crashed out of the Championship. As Sunderland prepared for League One, the defender looked for a route out.

Completing this list is striker, James Vaughan.

Vaughan signed during Simon Grayson’s spell as boss, but never hit the heights expected of a well-travelled striker.

When you think of poor Sunderland signings in recent years, Vaughan springs to mind.
