It's an exciting time to be an Everton fan now, with Carlo Ancelotti at the helm and the Italian will have big ambitions for the football club.

Having used the past few months to get to know his players, one thing will have become clear pretty quickly to the ex-Milan chief - the transfer market is going to be crucial.

It's no secret that Everton need plenty of new additions to become Champions League contenders and Ancelotti may be able to attract the right calibre of player to Goodison Park.

That hasn't happened over the years though, with the Toffees making plenty of mistakes when it comes to recruitment.

Here we look at SIX of their worst ever signings...

The right-back joined from Newcastle for around £700,000 but would make less that 20 appearances in just over a year before leaving for a £25,000 fee to go back to Switzerland.

That remarkable drop in value came because Hottiger just wasn't good enough and he was shipped out quickly after an underwhelming spell.

Joining for £5m in 2005, there was rightly a lot of excitement about Kroldrup, who had played in Serie A and represented Denmark.

The Premier League wasn't for him though, one start, a 4-0 loss to Aston Villa, was all the centre-back would make and he moved to Fiorentina that summer.

When a fan runs on the pitch and tries to take your shirt off you, indicating you're not good enough, it's not the best sign.

That's what happened to Nyarko though, who then demanded to leave Everton. After signing for £4.5m in 2000, again a pretty hefty fee, he was seen as a coup for the Blues but he made 33 appearances over four years, was loaned out twice and eventually let go.

A more recent recruit, Klaassen had captained Ajax and played for Holland so he was seen as a great bit of business when he joined for around £23m.

As it transpires, he was another who just couldn't adapt to the pace and intensity of the Premier League, leaving after one poor season for almost half of what the Toffees paid for him.

The winger had personal problems during his time at Goodison Park but it can't detract from the fact he was a let down having come from Inter Milan and played for Holland.

He was regularly disciplined by the club during his time on Merseyside and made just 20 league appearances in four years, whilst picking up a big salary.

There's no doubt that Everton have had worst strikers than Tosun over the years but the transfer fee is a big factor when judging signings.

And, for £27.5m, the Turkish international just hasn't delivered.

After a bright start, he managed just four goals in his last 30 Everton appearances and was sent out on loan in January. He doesn't appear to have a future at the club but there's no way they will get anywhere near the massive fee they paid for him.
