It has been another promising season for Bristol City, with the Robins once again mounting a push for the Championship play-off places, and with it, the chance to finally win promotion to the Premier League.

The Robins are one of the few teams in the Championship yet to play in English football's top-flight in its current incarnation, although it can't be said that they haven't backed themselves financially while looking to build a squad capable of reaching the promised land.

But while plenty of those signings have proved to be a success at Ashton Gate, there are also a number of pieces of recruitment that you imagine everyone involved with Bristol City would rather forget.

Here, we take a look at six of the worst Bristol City signings we've ever seen.

Joining the Robins on a one-year deal following his release from Watford in the summer of 2016, Ekstrand never really got going at Ashton Gate.

The defender struggled to force his way into the side ahead of the likes of Adam Webster and Holdur Magnusson before injury, and was unable to make his way back into the side even after his recovery, with his already short contract with the club being brought to a premature end with its termination in at the start of 2017.

James was just days away from his 40th birthday when he joined Bristol City in July 2010, but he would still go on to be a regular feature between the posts over the next two seasons.

However, the uncertainty around James that had dogged him for much of his career continued at Ashton Gate, with the former England international making a number of costly errors during his time with the club, who it was suggested he joined mostly with the intention of being closer to his family.

Joining on loan from Southampton in October 2008, having scored 29 league goals for the Saints the season before, Bristol City fans may have been expecting a big impact from Stern John at Ashton Gate.

Ultimately however, that would be far from the case. In 24 Championship appearances during his time with the Robins, John would find the net on just two occasions, failing to provide the goals the club needed, and it was little surprise that Bristol City did not look to make the misfiring striker's move permanent at the end of the season.

Joining from Bolton on a two-year deal in the summer of 2010, Hunt's Premier League experience did little to help him during his time with Bristol City.

The defender often looked off the pace for the Robins, making just eight appearances for the club, all of which came in his debut campaign at Ashton Gate, before being released by Bristol City halfway through his second season with the club.

Joining from French top-flight side St Etienne in January 2018, Diony's move to Ashton Gate came with the option for Bristol City to make that transfer permanent the following summer.

During his time in England however, Diony did little to suggest that was an investment worth making for the Robins. The striker started just once for Lee Johnson's side, coming off the bench six more times and failing to find the net even once for the club in some lacklustre performances. Not surprisingly, he returned to France at the end of that season.

Savage had failed to score in 25 career league appearances when he arrived at Ashton Gate in 2005, and that record wouldn't really improve while he was there.

In total, the striker scored just a single goal in 23 appearances for the Robins, with his all round play leaving plenty to be desired as well, before being released from his contract after dropping down the pecking order and going on to join Gillingham in September 2006.
