Having started the decade in League One, and won promotion to the Premier League on three separate occasions by the end of it, Norwich City have become something of a "yo-yo club" in recent seasons.

It could be argued that part of the inconsistency of Norwich's fortunes in recent seasons, is at least in part down to the quality of their signings.

While some of those that have been brought into Carrow Road have been impressive, others have rather failed to make the expected, and indeed required, impact for the Canaries.

Here, we take a look at some who have done that, with a look at six of the worst signings we have seen Norwich make.

Having joined Norwich on a four-year contract as a 22-year-old following a promising start to his career with Barnsley, Butterfield failed to build on that at Carrow Road.

The midfielder made just two cup appearances three cup appearances for the Canaries - who at the time were in the Premier League - and spent time out on loan with both Bolton and Crystal Palace, before securing a permanent departure barely a year later when he joined Middlesbrough in September 2013.

Theoklitos may have only played one game for Norwich during his time at the club, and it was a game that remains one of the club's darkest hours to this day.

Following their relegation to the Championship at the end of the previous season, goalkeeper Theoklitos was signed from Melbourne Victory in the summer transfer window, and handed his debut for the Canaries for the opening game of the 2009/10 League One season, in which they were thrashed 7-1 by East Anglian rivals Colchester, and Theoklitos would never play for the club again. He turned up late for an EFL trophy game that October, before returning to Australia the following March.

Signed by Norwich following their relegation from the Premier League in the summer of 2014, Lafferty failed to step up for the Canaries in their battle to return to the top-flight.

The striker scored just once in 20 games before being loaned out to Turkish side Rizespor for the final months of that season. In Lafferty's absence, Norwich did win promotion to the Premier League, although the Northern Irishman's return to the club brought about just 19 more appearances and three more goals - as well as a loan move to Birmingham - over the next two seasons, before he left the club when his contract expired in 2017.

Another who failed to fire when Norwich really needed him to following his arrival at Carrow Road, was Steven Naismith.

Joining from Everton in January 2016, Naismith scored just once in 13 appearances for Norwich as they were relegated from the Premier League that season. The following brought an underwhelming seven goals from 32 outings in all competitions, while injury restricted Naismith's chances during the 2017/18 campaign, with the striker joining Hearts on loan in January 2018. That move was extended for the 2018/19 season, and when his contract with Norwich expired last summer, Naismith was finally able to make his Tynecastle move permanent.

After showing glimpses of his potential at Wigan, Norwich reportedly coughed up a hefty £7million to bring Wildschut to Carrow Road the final day of the 2017 January transfer window.

That is something they may now regret, with Wildschut scoring just three goals and failing to provide a single assist in 25 appearances before joining Cardiff in January 2018. The winger then spent last season with Bolton as they plummeted out of the Championship, before being released by Norwich in the summer of 2019, when he moved to Israel to join Maccabi Haifa.

Disappointing goal returns from strikers have been something of a theme of this list, and none are likely to have left those of a Norwich persuasion as underwhelmed as Ricky van Wolfswinkel.

The Dutchman had scored 20 goals in 40 appearances for Portuguese giants Sporting before the Canaries paid a reported £8.5million for his services in 2013. However, van Wolfswinkel would fail to recreate that form in England, scoring once in 25 league appearances as Norwich were relegated from the Premier League in his debut season at Carrow Road. The striker spent the majority of the next two seasons on-loan in France and Spain, before returning to former club Vitesse in 2016, where, to add insult to injury, van Wolfswinkel would net 20 goals in 32 appearances that season.
