Wigan Athletic have enjoyed a lot of success over the last decade or so, with the Latics having managed to even secure an unlikely FA Cup triumph in 2013.

Wigan managed to earn promotion to the Premier League in the 2004/05 season, and the Latics performed remarkably well on a relatively low budget managing to retain their top flight status for eight successive campaigns, and the club had many standout performers during that period

However, Wigan eventually suffered relegation back to the Championship in 2013, the same season in which they lifted the FA Cup, and they have found themselves yo-yoing between League One and the Championship over the last few seasons.

Wigan have seen many of their smaller purchasers go on to flourish for the club, but there have also been some instances where players who have come in have not lived up to expectations.

Here then, we take a look at 6 of Wigan's biggest flops...

One of Wigan's biggest flops during their time in the Premier League was Marlon King, who was signed by the Latics from Watford in January in 2008, after scoring an impressible tally of 36 goals in 81 games for the Hornets and playing a key role in the club's promotion from the Championship in the 2005/06 season.

However, he failed to get anywhere near that sort of level for Wigan, with the striker only managing one goal in 18 games, while he was also shipped out on loan to Hull City in August 2008, before being sacked by the club the following year.

Another striker who Wigan brought into the club in the hope of being able to find the goals to keep them in the Premier League was Conor Sammon, with the forward signed from Kilmarnock in January 2011 in a bid to help the Latics find some extra firepower up front.

Sammon had enjoyed a prolific 2010/11 season scoring 18 goals for Kilmarnock, but he failed to transition into the Premier League and scored just once for the Latics in 32 matches, before joining Championship side Derby County in the summer of 2012.

A collection of Wigan's biggest flops could not be complete without the addition of striker Mauro Boselli, who was signed in the summer of 2010 from Argentine side Estudiantes, for what at the times was a significant outlay for the Latics, as they looked to make further progression in the Premier League.

The forward had been prolific for his former club, but he simply did not adapt to life in England, making just 15 goalless appearances and being shipped out on loan a few times, before eventually departing permanently for Mexican side Leon in 2013.

Yet another striker in this list, Delort arrive at Wigan in the summer of 2014 from Ligue 2 side Tours for around £3million, with the Latics hopeful the striker could score the goals to help them compete for promotion, but in actual fact they would go onto be relegated to League One that campaign.

Delort was another foreign import who struggled to adapt to English football, making just 11 goalless appearances for the Latics before eventually leaving in the summer of 2015, with the club needing to balance the books as they looked to cope with life in the third tier.

This one might be a little harsh considering his impact at Wigan was mostly limited due to injuries, but having arrived for around £2million from Almeria in the summer of 2011, it was hoped the winger would have more of a prominent role for the Latics.

Crusat only managed to score once for the Latics in his 15 appearances, and was never the same player following his lengthy injury layoffs, and he eventually left the club in May 2013 after his contract had expired before going onto retire at the age of just 32 after a short spell with Bnei Sakhnin.

Another player who failed to make any real impact with the club was defender Juan Carlos Garcia, who arrived at the club in the summer of 2013, after impressing with Honduran side UD Olimpia during a three-year spell with the club, but the left-back endured a disappointing debut for the Latics during a 5-0 defeat against Manchester City in the League Cup in September 2013.

That would prove to be Garcia’s one and only appearance for Wigan, with the defender failing to make a single appearance for the Latics in the league, and he was eventually released by the club at the end of the 2015/16 season before he announced his retirement from professional football.
