Blackburn Rovers were largely quiet during the January transfer window, with Tony Mowbray’s side focusing on their existing squad to help them continue what has been a largely solid season so far this term.

Rovers were active in the market during the summer bringing in the likes of Sam Gallagher, Stewart Downing, Bradley Johnson, Greg Cunningham, Tosin Adarabioyo and Christian Walton, while Lewis Holtby has also arrived at Ewood Park on a free transfer during the first half of the campaign.

Mowbray has managed to get some effective performances out of most of those addition so far this campaign, with those signings helping to keep Blackburn competitive in the Championship, and Rovers currently sit in 10th place just three points adrift of the play-off places.

However, not all of Blackburn’s recruits have been as successful over the years, with Rovers, like most clubs, having to endure their fair share of transfers which did not really work out as well they would have been anticipating.

Here then, we take a look at SIX of Blackburn’s biggest flops…

One signing that seemed like it could have the potential to be a successful one for Rovers, only to never really work out, was the addition of David Goodwillie from Dundee United in the summer of 2011 for around £2million, with the striker having just fired in 17 goals in 38 games in the Scottish Premiership the season before.

However, during his first season at Ewood Park the striker struggled to force his way into the side on a regular basis, scoring just twice in 20 Premier League appearances as Rovers suffered relegation to the Championship - and he made just eight goalless appearances the following year, before being shipped out on three loan moves and eventually leaving the club for Aberdeen in 2014.

Blackburn made Best one of their main signings in the summer of 2012, as they targeted a swift return to the Premier League, with Rovers paying Newcastle United around £3million for the striker, but the forward's spell at Ewood Park did not work out for either party.

Best would see his first season at Blackburn affected by an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which kept him out for six months, and the striker struggled to ever really recover from that setback going onto score just twice in 13 league appearances before being released at the end of the 2014/15 season.

Most Blackburn supporters might have already forgotten about the signing of Yann Songo’o following a successful trial with the club in the summer of 2013, with the defensive midfielder having been brought in on a two-year deal to add some competition for places at the heart of their midfield.

However, Songo’o failed to make a single appearance in the league for Blackburn during his time at Ewood Park, although he did feature in the League Cup in against Carlisle United, he then moved to Ross County on loan in January 2014, before eventually being released by the club the following year.

This was a move to forget for both Blackburn and Campbell, with the striker arriving at Ewood Park on a permanent deal in the summer of 2013 after his release from Queens Park Rangers, with the forward having impressed enough during a loan spell towards the end of the 2012/13 season to earn a permanent move.

However, Campbell’s permanent move to Rovers was affected by both a lack of form when he did play and matters off the field, and the striker would go onto make just seven league appearances for the club in his second spell without managing a single goal before being allowed to leave the club in 2014.

Another striker who did not endure a very successful spell at Ewood Park was Anthony Stokes, who was signed by Owen Coyle from Celtic on a three-year deal to add some extra firepower up front for Rovers ahead of the 2016/17 season.

The early signs did seem promising with the striker scoring on his debut, although that did come in a 4-1 defeat at home to Norwich City, that though would prove to be his only league goal for the club as he made just seven further league appearances as Rovers suffered relegation to League One - and Stokes made a permanent move to Hibernian the following summer.

This was another signing that will not live long in the memory for Blackburn supporters, with Sam Allardyce bringing the attacking midfielder to Ewood Park in January 2010 on a free transfer following his departure from VFB Stuttgart, in the hope the German would add some extra quality and creativity to the squad.

However, Basturk would make just a single Premier League appearance in the second half of the 2009/10 season, which came from the start against Wolves in April, but the German failed to impress and was subbed off at half time, and he did not make another appearance for the club and was released at the end of the campaign.
