Promotion to the Premier League meant that Leeds United were fishing in a very expensive pond over the summer transfer window.

Leeds went big on the likes of Rodrigo Moreno, Raphinha, Diego Llorente and Robin Koch, whilst permanent deals for Helder Costa and Illan Meslier were wrapped up.

Premier League football does that and days of looking for those gem free signings in the EFL seem a long time ago.

On the topic of searching for the best free agent you can pick up, we have dived into the archives at Elland Road, looking at SIX freebies that fans will remember as bargains...

The summer of 2008 saw an Argentinian striker arrive at Elland Road as an unknown quantity.

Becchio left a modern-day legend, though.

He scored 86 goals and will go down as one of the best free transfers in Leeds' history.

Kisnorbo was a warrior centre-back, who fans loved.

Images of him bandaged up with blood pouring from his head remind you of just how brave the Australian was.

Alongside that, he was a quality defender.

Injuries got the better of him, but fans loved him all the same.

Perhaps this might raise eyebrows, just like when Smith rocked up at Leeds on a free transfer.

He was a giant striker and a fairly underwhelming signing, but he had a great impact at Leeds in his only full season, scoring 13 goals and supporting Ross McCormack.

Smith was far from a waste of time and it was a disappointing day when he was sold.

Schmeichel was another to only play a single season at Leeds, featuring as the club's first choice in 2010/11 and helping Simon Grayson's side to seventh.

That was a great spell for him to catapult himself onto bigger and better things, which were unfortunately not with Leeds.

He could've gone down as one of the best freebies ever at Elland Road, but in the end, he was one of the biggest bargains in Leicester City's history.

Another goalkeeper, this time in the form of Sullivan.

He joined at a time that Leeds were in turmoil after relegation from the Premier League.

Sullivan was an impeccable professional and did Leeds a great service during his time at the club.

We move onto Kisnorbo's centre-back partner, Richard Naylor.

He wasn't a stylish player, but his role in the promotion-winning side in League One was huge. He was the skipper and maybe without him Leeds wouldn't have won promotion that year.

A brace in a 2-1 win at Yeovil was massive and who can forget his Old Trafford performance? Heroic.
