Over the years, Burnley have reaped the benefits of a number of signings.

While not all of those who made the move to Turf Moor will be remembered fondly by those associated with the club, there are a good number who are, and several of those, will have arrived there on a free transfer.

Plenty of those players who signed for the club for nothing, would go on to make significant impacts at the club, rightly earning themselves a place in Clarets history.

Here, we've taken a look at six of the best free signings to represent Burnley in recent years.

He may have only spent a brief time there, but Ian Wright still made a big contribution to Burnley.

Joining following his departure from Celtic in the year 2000, Wright scored four goals in 15 appearances for the Clarets, with his ability helping them win promotion to the second-tier of English football.

An icon of the early part of this century for Burnley, Jensen joined Burnley after leaving West Brom in 2003.

The goalkeeper spent the next ten years at the cub, making over 300 appearances, and played an important role in helping the club win promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history, keeping a clean sheet in the 2009 Championship play-off final win over Sheffield United.

Joining on a free after his departure from Bournemouth in 2005, Elliott spent the next six years with Burnley, making a total of 282 appearances for the club.

The midfielder was twice named the Clarets player of the year, and earned a place in club folklore by scoring the play-off final winner in 2009 that earned them promotion to the Premier League for the very first time.

Arfield joined Burnley after leaving Huddersfield in 2013, and would go on play a key role for Burnley over the next five years.

The midfielder twice helped Burnley win promotion from the Championship to the Premier League, helping the club establish themselves in the top-flight second time around, and made just under 200 appearances for the club before joining Rangers in 2018.

Following his release from QPR in 2015, Barton joined Burnley, who he promptly helped to the Championship title during his first season at Turf Moor, earning himself a place in the league's team of the year in the process.

The midfielder then left for a six-month spell at Rangers at the start of the 2016/17 season, but returned to Burnley in January 2017, and played a key role in helping them avoid relegation from the Premier League, before a betting related suspension ended his playing career.

Joining Burnley in the summer of 2013, Heaton is another two-time Championship promotion winner with the Clarets.

His stunning form at Turf Moor was key to the club finally establishing themselves as a feature in the Premier League, while also earning the goalkeeper a handful of England caps, and you only wonder what more he could have achieved - both for Burnley and England - had his final few years there not been dogged by injury.
