Birmingham City have had their fair share of signings over the years, although some haven't hit the heights originally expected of them. 

The Blues have had players that they have signed on free transfers that have gone on to be impressive additions to their team.

Birmingham are currently sat 16th in the Championship under the management of Aitor Karanka, and the club's supporters will be hoping they can put together a positive run of results heading into the hectic, and potentially season-defining festive period.

They're set to return to action on Wednesday evening, when they take on promotion-chasing Reading, in what is certain to be a tough test for the Blues as they look to pick up a much-needed win on their travels.

We take a look at SIX bargain free transfers that Birmingham City fans should remember well from over the years.

Carsley signed for the club in May 2008, after spending a considerable amount of time with Premier League side Everton.

The tough-tackling midfielder was born in Birmingham, and spent two seasons with the club, which also included playing his part in their promotion-winning campaign in his first full season with the Blues.

Phillips is an obvious name to include on the list, as he signed for the club ahead of the 2008/09 season.

The forward played a starring role in their promotion-winning campaign as well, as he netted 22 goals in 82 appearances for the Blues in total.

Phillips went on to have two seasons in the Premier League with Birmingham as well, before leaving the club at the end of the 2010/11 season.

Melchiot signed for Birmingham ahead of the 2004/05 season, after making over 100 appearances for Chelsea, where he was part of the side that won the FA Cup twice.

The Dutchman made 65 appearances for Birmingham City whilst they were in the Premier League, and his experience in the top-flight certainly cam in useful to the Blues.

Cotterill signed for the Blues in the 2013/14 season, after turning down a new contract with Doncaster Rovers.

The experienced Welshman was a valuable member of the Birmingham team whilst with the club, as the midfielder went on to make 108 appearances in total.

He left the club at the end of the 2017/18 season, after struggling for consistent game time, but was a bargain buy on a free transfer.

Bowyer joined Birmingham City on a free transfer ahead of the 2009/10 season.

He spent the 2008/09 season on loan with the Blues, and played his part as they won promotion into the Premier League.

Bowyer went on to make 94 appearances in total for Birmingham, and chipped in with 12 goals in his time with the club.

Burke signed for the club in the summer of 2011/12 after becoming a free-agent after a spell with Cardiff City.

The versatile midfielder went on to make 155 appearances for Birmingham City in total, before leaving the club in 2014, where he later went on to have spells with Nottingham Forest and Ross County.

He currently plays his football with Scottish side Kilmarnock, where he has made 114 appearances in all competitions in his time with them.
