Birmingham, Bristol City and Swansea are all set to rival Norwich City for the signing of Sheffield Wednesday striker Jordan Rhodes, Football Insider have reported.

The Canaries have been linked with a move for the Scotland international throughout the course of the summer transfer window, and are still thought to be hopeful of securing a deal for the 29-year-old.

Now however, it seems as though Daniel Farke's side are set to face late competition for Rhodes' signature, with the trio of Championship sides all also keen on a move for the striker.

Rhodes was part of the Norwich side that won promotion to the Premier League as Championship title-winners during a loan move to Carrow Road last season, so he would surely be a decent for signing for any of the three second-tier sides interested in him, right?

Here, we've put the spotlight on Rhodes' performances for Norwich last season to find out if that is indeed the case.

While the fact that Rhodes rarely played 90 minutes last season is worth taken into consideration when analysing his record of just six goals in 36 league appearances, there are other aspects of the striker's stats from last season that arguably present a cause for concern.

Despite finding the net on six occasions last season, a total of 7.15 expected goals for the campaign appears to suggest that Rhodes missed some fairly simple chances to put the ball in the back of the net during his time at Norwich.

That apparent loss of a killer instinct will surely be a worry for any side contemplating a move for the striker, and it feels a far cry from the dangerman who once ran Football League defences ragged for the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Huddersfield Town.

However, it seems that there are still other aspects of Rhodes' game that do provide some source of encouragement.

With what looks to be an impressive 72.7% of his shots finding the target, Rhodes is clearly a striker who still knows where the goal is, and you wonder it may simply be a case of slowly building his confidence - which will surely have taken a hit following his difficult spell in the Premier League with Middlesbrough - up again, in order to get him firing on all cylinders.

If whoever signs Rhodes is able to do that, then it still seems they could be getting a more than useful player at this level.

In spite of the fact that Rhodes is far from the most physical presence on any football pitch, with an aerial duel success rate of well over 30%, the striker is still evidently a threat to capitalise on crosses sent into opposition penalty areas, ensuring that that remains a potential attacking outlet for any of those sides interested in him.

Add to that a pretty solid pass success rate of 70%, and it does seem as though Rhodes is still someone who can do an effective job at this level when called upon.

While a second chance in the Premier League and a return to Norwich may seem the attractive option for Rhodes, you wonder just how many opportunities that will provide him, and his performances at the top tier previously also raise the question of how capable of taking them would be.

By contrast, the stats here suggest that Rhodes still has the potential to be a success at second-tier level next season.

If he can exploit that potential, then you imagine we could see Rhodes back in the goals and back as a regular in a side's starting lineup in the coming campaign, and it seems the striker should at least be considering a stay in the Championship in order to do that.
