Aston Villa face Derby County in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Monday and manager Dean Smith faces plenty of important decisions ahead of the game.

One player who will almost certainly miss the game is defender James Chester, who has not played for the club since January and has been struggling with a knee injury.

Chester was an important player for Villa during the first half of the season, but has spent the last three months on the sidelines and his future at the club is now uncertain, given the impressive performances of Tyrone Mings, Kortney Hause and Axel Tuanzebe in his absence.

Here, we take a look at some of his stats from this season, to assess whether Aston Villa should keep or sell the player.

Chester has been an important player for Aston Villa this season, making 28 appearances in the Championship, scoring five goals.

His stats this season suggest that he is an influential player on the pitch.

Chester makes an average of 6.4 clearances per game and wins an average of 3.7 aerial duels per game. The centre-back also makes an average of 44.6 passes per game and has a pass success rate of 87%.

His stats suggest that he could still be an influential player for Villa next season and that he deserves another chance to prove his importance to the team, in reality though, his future at the club is likely to depend on the outcome of the play-off final.

If Villa fail to win promotion, it is difficult to see them re-signing Mings, Hause or Tuanzebe for next season and this could open the door for Chester to remain at the club.

If they win the play-offs, then it is difficult to see Chester remaining at Villa Park, despite his previous experience in the Premier League.

If he is to leave the club in the summer though, his stats this season suggest that he is still good enough to be an asset for any team in the Championship.
