The Aston Villa job has got the football world talking and debating, with ex-players chipping in and former managers wanting their say too.

One man currently out of work who seems keen on the role is former Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy. He was speaking on Virgin's Champions League coverage earlier this week and stated he would like a stab at the job, even suggesting he should be preferred to Thierry Henry.

McCarthy has previously got two teams out of the Championship, Wolves and Sunderland, but struggled in his five years at Ipswich Town. He's still looking for a return to the game and sees Villa as a big challenge.

Would they do well to appoint the 59-year old? McCarthy certainly knows the level and spent a lot of time working under tight budget restrictions at Ipswich, but would he have what it takes to get Villa out of the Championship?

Or should they steer clear? Here's two reasons FLW think they should avoid Mick McCarthy at all costs.

Can you imagine the fan backlash if they plumped for McCarthy? He's a relic, a man who represents exactly the same things Steve Bruce did. They're a similar age and from similar backgrounds. It would simply a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire.

The fans wanted Bruce out because he was a dinosaur, a man stuck in the past. McCarthy is exactly the same.

McCarthy set Ipswich up not to get beat, every week. Portman Road became packed with vitriol and hate towards the end as his negative sides failed to entertain.

That can't happen at Villa. They have exciting players and need to be an attacking force. There's no evidence at all that McCarthy could provide that.
