Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett is keen to keep impressive Wolves midfielder Connor Ronan at Fratton Park, but admits the player's future is in the hand of his parent club.

The 20-year old has been in great form for Pompey this season, but he has a year left on his Molineux contract meaning the decision isn't Jackett's to make.

"He’s a player we’re obviously interested in." he told the Portsmouth News.

"It’s not something we’ve discussed, but for Wolves they aren’t going to necessarily commit to it. Generally, they get all of their players back in pre-season and assess their options then."

Ronan has just 16 Wolves appearances to his name, but his spell at Fratton Park has brought him 18 outings already this term. He's impressed with his run of games, being billed as a 'natural footballer' by Pompey's Joe Gallen.

"He’s been looking for the break to get into first-team football," continued Jackett.

"He was slightly frustrated, if pleased to be at a club going in the right direction in Wolves. You want to be there or thereabouts with the first team and, as a young player, make a mark. He’s happy and pleased for us taking the chance on him with limited league experience."

Ronan started his career at Rochdale before swapping Spotland for Molineux in 2016.

The Verdict

Time and again young players thrive in League One or League Two after struggling to make a name for themselves with their parent club.

There's no better move than Pompey at present either, they're on a collision course with the Championship after some really testing times and a young player establishing himself there could well find his name in lights in a year or two.
