Tim Sherwood is Queens Park Rangers' first-choice candidate to become the club's new manager, according to the Evening Standard.

Steve McClaren was sacked as R's boss on Monday, after less than a year in charge at Loftus Road, following a poor run of just one win from 15 league matches.

It is understood that QPR have drawn up a shortlist of candidates to replace McClaren, with former the Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa boss emerging as the club's number one target.

The 50-year-old worked closely with the club's director of football Les Ferdinand during his time at Tottenham and have two have remained close friends.

The report by the Evening Standard also states that Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth is on QPR's shortlist if Sherwood does not take the job, as well as Charlton Athletic boss Lee Boywer.

QPR are currently 17th in the Championship table, eight points above the relegation zone and face leaders Norwich City in their next game at the weekend, with McClaren's former assistant John Eustace taking caretaker charge.

The Verdict

Sherwood is an experienced manager and could be a good choice for QPR.

He has been out of work since leaving Aston Villa in 2015 and was the strong favourite to take over at Loftus Road after Harry Redknapp resigned as R's manager four years, before talks broke down.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few days as the club continue their search for McClaren's successor.
