After a disappointing season, Reading are looking to rebuild their squad in order to push up the table.

They finished 17th place in the end, just three points above 21st place Rotherham and 22 points off the play-off spots.

Many expected them to make a run for that top six at the start of the season, but their squad didn't perform and they had to settle for lower mid-table.

A number of key players have departed from the club this summer already, with Hal Robson-Kanu, Anton Ferdinand and Simon Cox not having their contract renewed, whilst loanees Michael Hector, Andrew Taylor, Ola John, Lucas Piazon, Alex Fernandez and Matej Vydra will be returning to their respective parent clubs for next term.

Their matchday squad for their first fixture of the season next year could be quite different to the one they fielded for their final game of this campaign, as they will need to make up for the players they have lost.

Here, in the opinion of FootballLeagueWorld's Ryan Evans, is FIVE players that Reading cannot afford to miss out on this summer.....

Tom Bradshaw

A pretty obvious choice, as the Walsall man looks likely to not make it into the second tier with his colleagues this season, and definitely deserves to be there.

Whilst his game has been a little sporadic so far, he is only 23-years old and is on the right track to one day become a Premier League star.

He received his first Wales cap earlier this year, and is in with a great shout of going to the European Championships with Chris Coleman's side.

Even just going with the squad would be extremely beneficial, and that experience would make his signature even more lucrative.

With 17 goals and one assist this season, Bradshaw has scored every 198 minutes he's played for the Saddlers, a more than decent return.

Sergi Canos

At 19-years-old, Canos is one of Liverpool's highest rated youngsters, but all is not well at Melwood when it comes to the situation of the wide-man.

He has had contract disputes with the club, and is reportedly unsettled in Liverpool. He has spent almost the entirety of this season at Griffin Park, impressing by scoring seven goals in his 38 appearances at the club.

Should Canos decide that his time at the Reds is up, he would have plenty of choices as to where his next destination will be. Spanish clubs Eibar and Sporting Gijon are believed to want to bring him back to Spain, whilst Brentford are favourites due to him being on loan at the club since August.

Earlier this week, the Royals were also linked with signing the former Barcelona youth player, who will be in demand come 1st July.

Jonathan Kodjia

Unknown before his move to Bristol City last summer, Kodjia has hit the ground running in his first season in England with 19 goals, making him the league's fourth highest scorer.

He has put Kieran Agard into the shade, forcing him to just seven Championship starts following his heroics to get the Robins out of League One last season.

He earnt his move to England with an incredible season at French club Angers last season, scoring 15 in 28 appearances.

He is also a former player of Reims, where he has had four loan spells during his six year stay in the Champagne-Ardenne region.

Kodjia's signing would be a great move for Reading, as a proven goalscorer at this level could be the signing that makes their 2016-17 campaign a memorable one.

Shane Duffy

The Blackburn defender has been one of the club's best players this year, but following the departure of Paul Lambert, there could be many players cast out of the club with the changes expected when a new manager is appointed.

The centre-back, an area where the Royals will need reinforcements, has been a key player and led his side to conceding just 46 goals this season, a record that only Preston alongside the top six can better.

On top of this, the 22-year old has attracted plenty of interest, with Crystal Palace leading West Brom and Hull in the race for his signature.

If Brian McDermott can persuade Duffy to move to Berkshire this summer rather than the Premier League, he could have made the signing of the window.

Marcin Wasilewski

The Leicester City defender could well be a bargain this summer for many a team in the second tier, out of contract at the Premier League champions and will more than likely leave on a free.

The Pole has 60 appearances for the Foxes in the league since signing back in 2013, but had to spend most of this season on the bench thanks to the form of captain Wes Morgan and new signing Robert Huth.

However, he was a major force behind Leicester's charge to safety at the back end of the 2014-15 campaign, winning a lot of praise from many pundits.

At 35, his Premier League days might be over, but would represent a great signing for a Reading defence that need to improve if the club are to rise up the table. His physicality is a massive part of his game, and would be an ideal replacement to Ferdinand.
