Sunderland are starting to pick up speed in Sky Bet League One, making it two wins in the matter of days in midweek as the Black Cats ran out 2-1 winners against Rochdale.

The pressure had started to build on manager Jack Ross after a somewhat lacklustre start to the campaign, but a win over promotion rivals Portsmouth at the weekend restored the Stadium of Light faithful's belief.

On Tuesday night, they made it two wins in four days thanks to a gritty, determined performance against Rochdale at the Crown Oil Arena.

Callum Camps cancelled out Aiden McGeady's first half strike, but after wave after wave of pressure in the second 45 minutes, striker Charlie Wyke grabbed his second goal of the season in all competitions to secure a 2-1 win for Ross' side.

Ross recently came and out sang Wyke's praises, speaking about the powerful and physical presence he brings to the front-line that no other player does as well as him in the Black Cats squad.

Via the Northern Echo, he said: "We don’t really have an alternative to Charlie in terms of what he can do. Nobody else really gives us the same attributes that he can provide.

"Saturday was probably a case in point – without him in the side, it was difficult at times if we were looking to play longer. We didn’t really have that target until he came on, whereas in the latter part of the game, he gave us that."

With the 26-year-old scoring two goals in three games, and Marc McNulty also impressing since his arrival on loan from Reading, the pressure is well and truly on for Will Grigg to deliver.

Here, we take a look at his season so far, as well as his frustrating time on Wearside to date as well...

Having been so prolific for the likes of MK Dons and Wigan Athletic in the past, big things were expected of Grigg after making the £4m move from the DW Stadium last January, following the departure of Josh Maja to Bordeaux.

But the 28-year-old has endured a really frustrating time since arriving on Wearside, failing to fire the Black Cats towards promotion last season, and leaving a lot to be desired thus far this term.

Grigg has made just one league start for the Black Cats this season, playing for a total of just 217 minutes and making three appearances from off the bench.

The Northern Ireland international was expected to bring goals to Sunderland when he signed from Wigan last term, but he is yet to open his account for Ross' side this season, and has scored just five goals in 27 matches for the club at present.

It's not as if Grigg is even coming close to finding the back of the net - he has had just three shots on target this season, having only five touches inside the box.

He has been effective when being brought on from off the bench, winning 27 aerial duels as Sunderland looked to throw men forward, as well as accruing a pass success rate of 86%.

But a player of Grigg's value, expertise and calibre in League One should be looking to make much, much more of an impact in the third tier, and he must step up his game.
