Sheffield Wednesday fans will be optimistic about what next season can bring after a strong end to the campaign.

However, it was still a disappointing season for the Owls, with the Yorkshire side having to settle for a bottom half finish despite making the top six in the two previous years.

And, a play-off finish will be the target next season although to do that manager Jos Luhukay will have to make changes to his squad.

Having a lot of his senior players back, who missed a lot of this season through injury, will obviously be a big boost but quality is still needed.

One area they will look to strengthen is up front, with the likes of Steven Fletcher and particularly Jordan Rhodes not delivering when called upon.

Here we look at five potential striker signings for Wednesday...

The Owls are one of several sides linked with the £6.5m-rated Peterborough man and he would be a major signing.

With 27 goals in League One this season, Marriott is clearly ready for the step up. At 23 he still has a lot of time to improve and could thrive at Hillsborough.

Hugill has struggled to get a game at West Ham since joining from Preston and that's unlikely to change.

Therefore, he will be available this summer and has already proven himself to be a good Championship striker.

The Scotland international was superb at Barnsley in the second half of the season despite the Tykes relegation.

He is intelligent with his movement and cool in front of goal and would be a coup for the Owls.

The Norwich City man had a disappointing season by his standards but is still a class act in the Championship.

With the likes of Fernando Forestieri and Barry Bannan feeding him, the Portugal international could be lethal at Wednesday.

Assombalonga was one of the most feared strikers in the Championship 12 months ago but has struggled since making a big-money move to Middlesbrough.

Given that, Tony Pulis may be prepared to cash in and whilst he would command a big fee, the former Forest man could fire the Owls to the play-offs.
