Cardiff's squad needs bolstering if they want to stay in the Premier League next season.

Neil Warnock got the utmost out of this team in a remarkable campaign which saw them finish in the second automatic promotion spot just ahead of Fulham.

However, the standard of the Premier League means they can't afford to stand still with new personnel a priority.

Kenneth Zohore and Gary Madine are the main options for the centre-forward role, so Warnock needs to add a significant goalscoring threat as well as more options in general.

The Championship may be one of the best places to look because he can use the lure of Premier League football to bring in targets.

Here are five players that the Bluebirds should be looking at...

Waghorn had a stellar first season in the Championship for Ipswich after joining from Rangers. He scored 16 goals and assisted 11 in a side which was defensively-minded first and foremost in a similar way to how Warnock sets his teams up.

The similarity in systems means that he has a good chance of replicating this form with Cardiff. He played a lot of the season alongside Joe Garner, so a front two set-up would be the best fit for him and Kenneth Zohore could form an excellent understanding with him due to the differences in style of play.

McBurnie was on loan at a struggling Barnsley side from Swansea in the second half of the season. The lack of quality and limited service in the team didn't hinder him because he scored nine goals in 17 games.

Cardiff are unlikely to carve out many openings especially amongst the top sides in the Premier League. Therefore, they need a striker who can be clinical with limited service and McBurnie fits that perfectly. The attraction of playing in the Premier League should be enough to pry him away from relegated Swansea City.

Maguire had an excellent season which has gone under the radar along with Preston's impressive first season under Alex Neil. He joined the Lilywhites from Cork City last summer, but it didn't take him long to get used to the standard of the Championship because he scored 10 goals in 24 games.

Preston were a team that were able to grind out games through their solid defensive base, so he is similar to McBurnie in that service and chances were limited and he is capable of helping out defensively. Therefore, he would be a good fit for Cardiff because he is used to the demands that Warnock imposes on the team and could form an effective part of the overall unit.

Assombalonga was an expensive signing for Middlesbrough last summer because he signed for £15 million from Nottingham Forest. However, he hasn't matched the high expectations that came with his fee because he scored 15 goals in 46 appearances.

Therefore, Cardiff could have the opportunity to get him for a cheaper price by using their Premier League status to attract him as well as financial incentives. He is a top goalscorer at this level with all-round ability which makes him a multifaceted threat. Warnock could use him as an attacking focal point with the majority of service going to him.

Hernandez is a free agent in this summer, so that combined with his goalscoring record makes him a tempting proposition for most clubs. Cardiff have an advantage, though, because they can use their Premier League status to attract him.

There are a few negatives with him such as his lack of defensive contributions as well as the inability to use him as a direct outlet, but he would be invaluable in their attacking shape due to his ability to carve out chances as well as quick transitions. He also has experience in the top division from his time with Hull, so the adjustment period would be quicker than most alternatives.
