Josh Maja was one of the standout players for Sunderland in League One last season and scored 16 goals in 30 appearances for the Black Cats.

The 20-year-old turned down the offer of a new contract at the Stadium of Light and then decided to leave the club to join Bordeaux in the January transfer window - for a reported fee of £3.5million.

However, things haven't quite turned out as the striker would have hoped since his move to France. After making just seven appearances for Bordeaux last season, Maja has continued to find first-team opportunities hard to come by since the start of the new campaign.

In the latest FLW Spotlight, we discuss Maja's start to life at his new club in more detail, by taking a closer look at some of his stats for Bordeaux from the season so far...

Maja was one of the standout players for Sunderland in the first half of last season, but he's really struggled to make an impact for Bordeaux.

The forward made just seven appearances in Ligue 1 last term, with four of those coming from the bench and scored one goal.

The striker has struggled for game time this season too and has made a total of seven appearances in Ligue 1 so far, but all of them have come from the substitutes bench and he's played just 90 minutes in total.

Maja's only goal of the season for Bordeaux came in his second appearance of the campaign against Montpellier, but it wasn't enough to earn him a place in the starting line-up for their next game.

The striker has had a total of five shots on goal this season and three of them have been on target, which isn't too bad considering how little time he's had on the pitch.

However, considering he'd already scored nine goals for Sunderland by this stage last season, you imagine that he'll be very disappointed that he hasn't had a chance to influence games more for his new club.

His passing stats so far this season make for good reading, as he has a pass accuracy of 91.7%. Although this isn't as impressive when you consider that he's only made 48 passes in total and the majority of them have been short passes.

This is still a huge improvement over his passing stats for Bordeaux last season though, as he made 52 passes, but could only manage a pass accuracy of 78.8%.

Maja has won 47.6% of his 21 offensive duels, so this is perhaps one aspect of his game that he could look to improve on. This is another massive improvement from last season though, as he only won three of his 24 (12.5%) offensive duels for Bordeaux.

Four out of his six attempted dribbles have been successful though, which is impressive and another improvement on last season, where he only managed one successful dribble.

He's also had six touches in the box, which is something that he'll be hoping to improve on and is actually down on his seven games for Bordeaux from last season, where he managed seven touches in the penalty area.

Maja has really struggled to make an impact for Bordeaux this season, although most of his stats from last season have improved significantly.

However, the striker will be more concerned by the fact that he's yet to start a league game for the club this season and may even regret leaving Sunderland, where he would surely be one of the first names on the team-sheet in League One.

If Maja had stayed at Sunderland and continued scoring goals, the club may have been able to win automatic promotion last season and with the benefit of hindsight, the striker may well regret his decision to turn down a new contract at the Stadium of Light.
