The blue half of Sheffield has really shown a huge difference in the current campaign compared to their previous history in the Championship.

They have commanded a top six spot for the majority of this season and none of the supporters would have expected them to be in this position with nine games to go at the start of the season.

Wednesday have finished in the bottom half for the past three seasons since they were promoted from League One in 2012.

Carlos Carvahal has been the catalyst to Wednesday’s success in his debut season in English football.

He has brought a sense of hope and unity to the club, and has got his players playing free-flowing attacking football.

The manager has also brought in signings that the supporters would not have even dreamt would ever grace the Hillsborough pitch.

There is a huge amount of potential in Wednesday’s team and one that could see players evolve into even better players next season.

Fernando Forestieri

Fernando Forestieri3

The forward’s contribution to Wednesday this season has been instrumental to their success.

The Italian's recent fortunes appear to have been a key reason why the Owls had gone five games without a victory before their clash with Nottingham Forest.

Wednesday paid £3 million for the Italian and it seems to be that the hefty sum has certainly paid off.

Forestieri scored five goals and made a further six to help Watford into the Premier League last season, and the 26-year-old has more than doubled his tally after netting 12 goals for the season.

The Italian has showed signs that he can compete with the best and it was peculiar that none of the top Premier League clubs enquired about the forward in January.

A second season in the Championship has significantly improved his footballing ability and he can only get better.

Atdhe Nuhiu

Atdhe Nuhiu

The big forward has really shown that he can prove to be a handful for defenders when he appears for Wednesday.

He gives the team a different option up front and since arriving on a free transfer from Rapid Vienna in July 2013, Nuhiu has netted 23 goals in 80 Owls starts.

He has featured prominently under Carlos Carvalhal, clocking up 33 appearances this season, hitting four goals.

Nuhiu’s hard-working, impressive performances this season is helping Carvalhal’s men pick up valuable points.

His eye-catching form is far from being overlooked as the Austria national team is considering selecting Nuhiu for their Euro 2016 squad.

This would be an enormous achievement for the forward and has all the credentials to be a top player next season.

Daniel Pudil

The Watford loanee has come on leaps and bounds in his temporary spell at Hillsborough and is even being considered to be one of the most improved left backs this season for his performances.

He ticks all the boxes for potential and first team experience with Wednesday has really pushed him on in his career.

If Wednesday are promoted to the Premier League, Pudil will not be out of his depth against some of the best wingers in the country.

Liam Palmer

The defender has made 15 appearances for Wednesday and is really impressing his boss with his consistency.

Palmer has only burst onto the scenes in the last few months, and many thought that the defender would be a bag of nerves.

However, Palmer has rose to the occasion and pulled off outstanding performances against some of the best Championship sides – keeping a clean sheets against Hull City.

He has certainly justified his inclusions in recent weeks and has shown that he could be a top star for the club next season.

Lucas Joao

The Portuguese striker was in red-hot form during the opening stages of the Championship season, but is form has died down.

He has shown us what he can do after witnessing him tear apart Arsenal’s defence in the Capital One cup all those months ago.

The youngster’s good form caught the eye of the Portuguese national side, who rewarded him with his first two senior caps.

However, Joao’s form seems to have dipped after his whirlwind start - and he has struggled since 2016.

The 22-year-old’s dip in standards has caused him to drop down the pecking order at the Yorkshire side, with the likes of Gary Hooper and Atdhe Nuhiu jumping ahead of him.

Carlos Carvahal had said that the young striker had got carried away with his success, but is starting to get back to his best.

He has bags of potential, but maybe with a more consistent season, he could build on his career in Sheffield.
