Sheffield Wednesday are clinging on to a play-off spot in the Championship at the moment, following Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw with promotion chasing Brighton.

However you look at things though, it has been a very good season for the Owls, and if they do miss out on the play-offs, it will still be seen as being a season of progress for them.

Under Carlos Carvalhal they have developed an excellent style of football and fans are finally getting to see their club challenge at the right end of the table.

A big part of this has been the quality of players brought in by the management team, and the performances they have delivered on a consistent basis.

There is a case to be made for many of the Owls squad to play at a higher level and every fan will no doubt have their own opinion as to who deserves that chance.

Lucas Joao

The youngster from Portugal looked the part during the first half of the season and excelled when selected to play up front and lead the line.

He destroyed Premier League Arsenal in the League Cup with a ruthless performance, and although his performance levels have dipped, it is clear to see that he is a lad with immense talent.

At just 22, and already on the radar of the Portuguese national team, Joao is definitely a player who can go on to make a big splash in the game.

Fernando Forestieri

The little Italian has been a revelation since signing from Watford in the summer in a £3m move, and is the Owls top scorer and go to man when they need something special.

It came as a bit of a surprise to some that Watford allowed him to leave in the summer, without being given a chance to show what he can do in the Premier League, but this was just to the Owls gain.

Forestieri can definitely play at a high level, and it would be no surprise to anyone if someone came in with a bid for him during the summer.

Kieran Westwood

The Irish stopper has already had a spell in the top flight, but since his move to the Owls he has excelled and shown everyone what a top quality goalkeeper he is.

They clearly miss his presence when he does not play, and he breeds confidence in to his back four.

Westwood will be hoping to make the squad for the Euros in the summer for Ireland, where he may get the chance to demonstrate his ability on a bigger stage, showing the world just how good he can be.

Barry Bannan

Why Crystal Palace allowed Bannan to leave looks to be a bit of a mystery, but once again is to the benefit of the Owls.

The 26- year-old looks a class above most of the other players who step foot on the pitch with him, and surely can operate at the top level.

He is a bundle of energy and has a class and calmness on the ball not demonstrated by many players in the league, and Owls fans have grown to love the little Scot already.

He may well draw interest again in the summer from a string of clubs, and the Owls will do well to keep hold of their star midfielder.

George Hirst

Wednesday are not really renowned for producing young players left right and centre like their cross city rivals United, but in young Hirst they have a striker up and coming who looks the real deal.

The son of former Owls favourite and star striker David Hirst, he already has the name to raise expectation levels around him.

But he has scored goals for the youth and reserve teams this season, and has found himself on the score sheet for England at under-17 and 19 level.

He is a hot prospect at Hillsborough, and fans will be willing him to do well and make a massive success of his career like his father.
