Sheffield Wednesday defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0 on Saturday in the Sky Bet Championship, to cap off a brilliant week which saw them also overcome Premier League giants Arsenal in the Capital One Cup.

The Owls have gone ten matches unbeaten and currently sit on the cusp of a play-off place in the Championship league table.

Boss Carlos Carvalhal arrived in the summer and despite huge doubts over his Championship credentials, he has really got fans of the South Yorkshire club dreaming of top flight football once again.

The Owls boss has assembled a squad that seems more than capable of challenging for a top six place come March and the big issue could be whether or not Wednesday will be able to keep hold of their prized assets come the January transfer window.

Here Football League World's Lee Clarke takes a look at FIVE players who look destined to play Premier League football with, or without, Wednesday.

One of Carvalhal's more eye-catching summer signings was to lure the Argentinean forward from Watford on a permanent deal.

Many Watford fans were shocked that the striker wouldn't get a chance in the Premier League following last season's promotion from the Championship.

The 25-year-old is destined to feature for a Premier League side in the future and if current form continues he could take Wednesday all the way to the top flight.

He has netted four goals so far this season and his most recent was the winner on Saturday against Forest.

The defender was on the scrapheap at Leeds United when he joined Sheffield Wednesday at the start of last season but his form at Hillsborough as been simply irresistible.

The 24-year-old was used as a right-back at the Whites but had stamped his authority on a central defensive berth at the Owls and is now the vice-captain of the team.

The ball playing central defender must be content with his own performances and his battling qualities have been influential in assisting Wednesday's rise up the Championship table.

Kieran Westwood

Republic of Ireland international Westwood has played in the Premier League previously for Sunderland, but in three years in the North East he was restricted to just 19 appearances.

Since signing for Wednesday his form has been superb and you would have to say that he is now one of the best goalkeepers currently playing outside of the Premier League.

It is no surprise that Westwood has a desire to return to the top flight at some point in his career and his ability just oozes Premier League class.

His distribution is among the best in the league and he collects crosses with ease from wide positions.

The dynamic midfield maestro moved to Sheffield Wednesday from Crystal Palace in the summer and he has been in excellent form so far this season.

The ex-Aston Villa midfielder has actually played over a hundred times in the Premier League already throughout his career, and his experience playing at that level makes him a big coup for Wednesday.

It is remarkable that the Owls were able to sign the 25-year-old, with his performances so far this season doing enough to show that the Scotland international could quite easily still be playing Premier League football.

Lucas Joao

Eyebrows were raised during the summer when Carlos Carvalhal took Joao to Hillsborough on a permanent transfer from Nacional in Portugal, with several top European clubs interested in the player.

The ex-Portugal Under-21 international is on the brink of a call up to the senior national team, and his goal during Wednesday's win over Arsenal last week was the icing on his season so far.

Joao has featured in every league game for the Owls this season and has netted four goals for the club.

It is not just about goals with Joao's game however and his ability to bring others around him into a game are excellent, and at just 22-years-old he also looks set for a bright future.
