Shrewsbury Town have confirmed that they have parted company with manager Sam Ricketts following a disappointing start to the season.

Salop finished 15th in League One before the season was curtailed last term, and would have been looking to kick on following a steady 2019/20 campaign.

But Town have managed to win one of their opening 13 games this season, and currently sit 23rd in the league table after six draws and six defeats.

This has now culminated in Ricketts losing his job at New Meadow, with the club now searching for a replacement after parting company with the 39-year-old.

Here, we take a look at five replacements Shrewsbury should consider following the departure of Sam Ricketts...

Cowley is likely to be a name on many fans' lips.

He was perhaps unfairly sacked by Huddersfield after keeping the Terriers up from relegation at the end of last season, and won the League Two title with Lincoln before then.

He has a big future in management, and could be a great option for Salop.

Adkins is an experienced head who could be a good fit for Shrewsbury.

He has been out of work since leaving Hull City at the end of 2018/19, and may be looking for a new project after a short time away from the game.

He could be a great option for them.

After tough spells in charge of Leeds and Hibernian, Heckingbottom may be looking for a fresh start.

The 43-year-old did a superb job in charge of Barnsley, guiding them to promotion from League One in 2015/16.

He knows how to work on a tight budget and could be a good fit for Shrewsbury.

Nolan is currently a coach at West Ham United, but could be tempted back into management.

The former Newcastle and Bolton midfielder was sacked by Notts County in 2018/19 after only five games, despite guiding them to a play-off semi-final in 2017/18.

He knows how to motivate a group of players and has been in this situation before.

Hurst may have unfinished business at New Meadow.

The 46-year-old guided Shrewsbury to an unlikely play-off final in 2018, before leaving for Ipswich Town the following season.

His time at Portman Road went badly wrong, though, and after a failed spell at Scunthorpe, he is still out of work.

The former Grimsby boss has been in this situation before and guided Shrewsbury out of the relegation zone.
