Reading FC have had a relatively mediocre season thus far in the Sky Bet Championship.

After the sacking of Steve Clarke back in December, the Royals have sustained some consistency with the return of Brian McDermott who had previously managed the club from 2009 to 2013.

McDermott took over at the Championship outfit with them sitting in 14th place in the league standings. However, with a resurgence in confidence, results have improved under the Englishman and Reading now sit in 11th place in the Sky Bet Championship.

The main reason for a resurgence in performances in results is because of the quality Reading are beginning to show in their performances.

Most notably, they defeated West Brom 3-1 in the FA Cup fifth round to reach the sixth round of the domestic competition.

Goals from Michael Hector and Lucas Piazon helped to that impressive coup over the Premier League side.

The win over Tony Pulis' men made it very clear to us how impressive the Reading squad is; and, potentially, how some of their players could perform in the Premier League.

Michael Hector

Like many Reading players, Hector has been on the books of Premier League clubs.

In a deadline day deal, Hector signed for Premier League club Chelsea.

As part of the deal, he was sent back on loan to the Royals for the 2015–16 season.

Hector was spotted by Reading after playing against them in a friendly for Barking Abbey and joined on scholarship terms at the start of the 2009–10 season.

Between signing for Reading and penning his Chelsea deal in 2015, Hector was loaned out to a number of Football League including Barnet and Cheltenham Town.

So far this season, he has made a great contribution at the heart of the Royals' defence - helping his side to 11 clean sheets in the league. His power and strength will also be something on the radar of Premier League sides due to the fact that he can ease strikers of with very little effort.

After a few years of getting some experience under his belt, Hector looks to be reaching new heights in his career. The 23 year-old has made 24 league appearances this season as well as appearing twice in the FA Cup.

Not known for his attacking ability, Hector has also scored a goal in his sides historic 3-1 win over West Brom in the FA last month. As a result, you'd fully expect Chelsea to be looking at the younger defender for a potential return to Stamford Bridge as captain John Terry looks to be heading out the London club at the end of the season.

Matěj Vydra

After a successful loan spell at Watford whereby he scored 16 goals to help the Championship side to the Premier League last season, Watford signed him on a permanent deal from Udinese where he had 2 appearances in a 5 year spell.

Vydra had several loans whilst on the books of Udinese, Vydra spent time out on loan at Club Brugge and West Brom as well as Watford. However, with the arrival of Chico Sanchez Flores in the summer, Vydra had no opportunity to prove his worth to the Spaniard and therefore joined Reading on loan in September.

Since then, the Czech-Republic international has had 22 appearances for the club and has become the Royals' top scorer in all competitions.

The goals soring contribution from the striker has not gone unnoticed and boss Brian McDermott has said that Vydra is constantly “putting himself on the line” for the club.

The quality of Vydra cannot be questioned given that he is a striker has attracted Premier League Quality before. Therefore, you'd find it hard to say that we wont see this striker in the Premier League again - given that he is only 23 years old.

Ola John

Ola JohnOla John
John signed for the Royals on a season-long loan deal in the summer of 2015 from Benfica, whom he helped win the Primeira Liga, the Super Cup and the Taça da Liga treble last season - scoring the winner in the final of the latter against Maritimo. The winger has been a Benfica player since 2012 and has accumulated 55 appearances for the Portuguese giants. During that time, the 23-year-old scored 3 goals. The Dutch-international, who has made one appearance for his nation, had started his career at FC Twente where he made 46 appearances and scored 9 goals before signing a 5-year-deal at Benfica. So far in the 2015/16 season, John has made 19 league appearances and scoring 2 goals in the process. He was also instrumental in his sides 2-2 draw to Fulham last weekend as he set up Robson-Kanu to take his side into a 2-1 lead before half-time. The assist was a prime example of John's ability. He was able to use his pace and power to beat Fulham's defender on the wing and thread an audacious cross for Robson-Kanu who headed in from close range. The question for John is whether he can maintain his improvement to see him reach the dizzy heights of the Premier League. However, there is definitely no doubting the current ability of the Dutchman.

Lucas Piazon

piazon Gustavo Lucas Domingues Piazon , commonly know as a much more pronounceable Lucas Piazon, joined the Royals on 31 August 2015 in a season long loan deal. Since then, the 22-year-old has made 21 appearances for the Championship side in all competitions as well as scoring 5 goals. The Brazilian winger has represented his country at every age group from U15 right through to U23's. Therefore, it is easy to see the amount of quality Piazon must posses. He recently scored in the Royals' FA Cup victory over West Brom in the fifth round of the cup competition. As well as this, Piazon scored his sides first goal in their third round 5-2 win over Huddersfield Town back in January. Like many other Reading players, Piazon has an abundance of qualities that could see him end up playing in the Premier League one day. However, his improvements will need to keep coming if he is to reach a permanent spot at a Premier League club.

Jordan Obita

obita1 The exciting England-international joined Reading's First Team in 2010 after coming through the Reading Academy ranks then making his first team appearance at just 16 years old. Since then, Obita has made 91 appearances for the Championship side. At just 22-years-old, Obita has a lot of time left in his career to make it to the top of the English football pyramid. Although Obita was given an early start to life with Reading, he has gained some experience lower down the Football League where played for Barnet and Gillingham - scoring 3 goals for the Gills. As a result, he has began to mature as a player recently as his understanding of the Football League grows more and more. Obita is yet to score this season for Reading but his attacking ability is definitely not his forte. Instead, he adopts more of a holding-midfielder roll that protects the back four. So far this campaign, he has managed to break up play in the midfield very well - but has 6 yellow cards to his name. His age is certainly not a problem as he has many years to evolve as a footballer and I fully expect him to keep improving. The only question is if he can keep his discipline in order. If he can, I'm sure Premier League teams will start to take a large interest in the young midfielder.
