It is hard to believe that Portsmouth were once a Premier League outfit and won the 2008 FA Cup against current Championship club Cardiff City.

Despite their financial problems, Pompey will want to make a return to the Premier League to compete with their South Coast rivals Southampton.

Despite the club rapidly dropping to the fourth-tier, they have a vibrant academy which is developing some exciting new players to Pompey. The squad is packed with young talent who could make a name for themselves in the next few years.

There are some who have had a taste of the top division, but haven't been consistent enough and have brought themselves down a few divisions to build up their careers again.

FLW reporter Ashley Williams has gave his opinion and has picked out FIVE Pompey players who could be on the Premier League radar.....

Enda Stevens

The Irishman has had Premier League experience with Aston Villa and looked pretty comfortable playing to that standard.

He has also played in the Europa League with Shamrock Rovers.

The left-back plays with a lot of energy and is very good in one-on-one situations both offensively and defensively.

Despite Enda being quite young, a lot of the other youngsters are looking at Enda’s game and learning from him. There is no question that with more first-team football, Enda can slowly make his way up the leagues.

Ben Close

The 19-year-old has certainly given manager Paul Cook something to think about after some impressive performances.

The youngster has made his way through the Pompey academy, but has yet to make an appearance for Portsmouth in the league.

He was the stand out player in their Capital One cup tie against Derby County earlier in the season and certainly ticks all the boxes to be a great talent in time.

Conor Chaplin

The poacher has certainly given evidence for his killer instinct in front of goal.

The 18-year-old has blossomed at Fratton Park as he has scored five goals this season.

Pompey fans have witnessed Chaplin’s eye for a finish, which has got Championship clubs sniffing about for the Pompey man.

Matt Tubbs

The striker has also been a force in front of goal this season netting five goals and has proved that he can lead the Pompey front line.

Tubbs has always been consistent in the lower divisions after being crowned the League Two Golden Boot winner last season.

Could you question that it is too easy for the 31-year-old and he could make the step up?

Gary Roberts

The winger is highly regarded and was crowned League Two Player of the year in 2013/14 when Chesterfield took the title.

Roberts has scored four goals so far this season, but manager Paul Cook believes the fans are yet to see the best of the midfielder.

However, a niggling ankle injury has prevented him from performing to the best of his ability. Maybe once he is fully fit, he can kick on with Pompey and attract some attention from higher league clubs.
