Benik Afobe

As soon as the transfer window opened on January 2nd, it was a matter of not if, but when Benik Afobe would be snatched from the club.

The riches and the lure of the Premier League just cannot be ignored, so it was no surprise to see the England Under-21 star linked with a host of top flight sides.

He eventually secured his dream move to play against the best sides in England by finalising a move to Bournemouth.

With the club now supposedly having money in the transfer kitty, the fans were hoping that an out-and-out goalscorer would be brought into to replace the 23-year-old.

Instead, Joe Mason was brought in from Cardiff – an underwhelming signing which didn’t exactly get Wolves fans buzzing with excitement.

Although Afobe wasn’t as prolific this season as he was in the second half of last season when he banged in 13 goals in just 21 games, he was still Wolves’ main man up front and a constant menace to Championship defences.

After his move many thought he would struggle to hack it in the top division but he has proved any critics wrong by scoring three in six for his new club.

Wolves in contrast have struggled without their star striker up front – managing only one win in six games as Kenny Jackett’s men have fallen out of the play-off race.

Others have tried to fill the void – Polish striker Michal Zyro, got off to a flyer in his Wolves career by scoring three times in his first two games before being struck down with injury.

Joe Mason has scored twice for his new club but Kenny Jackett has been reluctant to start the new signing – opting for Bjorn Sigurdarson instead.

With top scorer James Henry now also out for the next few weeks, the goals look like they’re about to dry up at Molineux and the fans might regret not having Afobe in the ranks to pop up with a goal or two to get some results, and boost confidence around a melancholy Molineux.
