Ninth placed Sheffield Wednesday have had quite a good start to this year's Championship, but in order to push for the promotion places, manager Carlos Carvalhal may have to spend in January.

Wednesday have accumulated 24 points from 16 games, with Fernando Forestieri finding fine form; scoring five of the Owls' twenty goals.

Already in a better position than last year's 13th place finish, Wednesday's ever strengthening squad still isn't as developed as their promotion-chasing rivals.

Carlos Carvalhal, 49, a former Portuguese centre back, played 259 games for six different clubs in a career that spanned 15 years.

Here, FLW's Jack Smillie assess which FIVE players should be on Carvalhal's wishlist in January......

The Ewood Park hitman would be an excellent capture for the Owls. He could partner Forestieri, or even replace him as Sheffield Wednesday look to push on towards the Premier League.

It would be nice to see Wednesday score more goals, especially as every team above them in the league, except Cardiff City, have outscored them. Even some teams lower down in the league have scored more goals than the Hillsborough side this season.

Jordan Rhodes' dad is the Wednesday's goalkeeper coach so he could play an important part in smoothing over the deal.

Blackburn rejected a £14million bid from Middlesbrough in the summer, but the mega-rich Dejphon Chansiri is willing to make him the highest paid player outside the Premier League.

Blackburn are currently 16th in the Championship, and with their new manager, Paul Lambert, recently being appointed, there could be lots of change at Blackburn in the upcoming months.

Andre Gray

So far this season, Burnley's Andre Gray has looked absolutely unstoppable; he is currently top scorer in the Championship with ten goals.

He has played a huge part in Burnley's successes, rising them up to third place, only two points behind Hull and Brighton; who are tied on 34.

Gray has scored just under half of Burnley's goals this season.

I see no reason why Gray shouldn't be on Carvalhal's shortlist. The Thai owner Chansiri could definitely afford Burnley's asking price, but what if Burnley say that Gray isn't up for sale? As the saying goes, anything is available at the right price.

I guess it's a bit like asking for a top-of-the-range present for Christmas - there's no harm in trying.

Cedric Soares

The full-back may have just joined Southampton a short while ago, but Soares, 24, seems to be struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League.

Yes, he may have played well in some matches, but the Portuguese international has recently been dropped from the Southampton starting XI.

Carvalhal's fellow countryman could be available at a decent price, however, the cost doesn't trouble the rich Sheffield side.

In my opinion, a loan deal would be more likely. I see Southampton accepting a short-term 'until the end of the season' loan, but perhaps may require a fee.

A loan would see Soares get plenty of game time, allow his confidence to rise, but he would still be officially a Southampton player. I don't see Soares being allowed to leave because of is first team duties.

Jonas Oliveira

Jonas Oliveira, simply known more commonly as Jonas, is a Brazilian centre forward who is currently the top goalscorer in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, with eight goals in nine games.

Jonas, 33, is currently signed to giants Benfica; whom he has scored 27 goals for in 33 appearances. Very impressive form.

Furthermore, Jonas' contract expires in September 2016, so he may become available for the Owls soon.

Already armoured with Champions League experience, Jonas could potentially rip-up the Championship with his fantastic eye for goals.

Ryan Taylor

Ryan Taylor, the 31-year old Hull City left-back, not to be confused with Oxford United's Ryan Taylor! Noted for a career marred with injury, Taylor has sufficient Premier League experience with Wigan Athletic and Newcastle United.

Taylor, dubbed to be the best Championship left-back by popular game FIFA 16, has only played one game for Hull City this season.

If Taylor can recover from any minor injury niggles that be may be carrying, then he could provide excellent for Sheffield Wednesday, as they look to bolster their defence.

Taylor has an insanely strong amount of determination. At one point in his career, he was injured for 26 months with a anterior cruciate knee ligament injury.

Taylor's perseverance could provide the dressing room with a large and uplifting boost, as a promotional chase can be draining and very demanding.
