It has been an indifferent start to the season for Swansea City after relegation from the Premier League last term

Their most recent result, a 3-2 defeat at home to Ipswich Town leaves Graham Potter's men sitting 11th in the Championshp table, with four wins, five draws and three defeats from their opening dozen matches of the new campaign.

Nevertheless, it has been a promising start to Graham Potter's first stint of management in the Football League, and with the January transfer window coming up in a couple of months, expectations are still high in South Wales, with Swansea still hopeful of forming a promotion push in the second half of the campaign.

After a short international break, perhaps Potter was drawing up a list of targets for the Swans to sign in January.

Here, we take a look at five players that Swansea need to make to push them up the table in January…

In order to shore up their defence, the Swans should definitely look to reignite their interest in Scottish international Scott McKenna, of whom they enquired about at the end of the transfer window.

The 21-year-old defender captained his nation at the end of last season, and could fill the void left by Alfie Mawson who departed the Liberty Stadium in the summer.

Joe Rodon has built a solid partnership with Mike van der Hoorn at the back for Swansea, but with only Cameron Carter-Vickers as proper back-up, they need another defender.

Due to how highly-rated McKenna is, the Swans may have to pay big money for the Scot, therefore the free agent market may be of interest to Potter.

Welshman James Collins remains a free agent after his release from West Ham United in the summer, and the 35-year old could be a good back-up option for the Swans.

After missing out on Ryan Woods to Stoke City in the summer, you still feel that the addition of a creative midfielder in the middle of the park wouldn't go amiss.

Marcus Maddison is a player who somehow still finds himself at League One side Peterborough United, and produced 15 assists and scored 12 goals last year in League One, and could be a smart addition for Potter's side.

Liam Bridcutt is expected to leave Nottingham Forest in the summer having made just three appearances this term, and Swansea should definitely be looking at the 29-year old ahead of the transfer window.

Bridcutt is still a very good player at this level having been a solid figure for Leeds and Forest, and would add much needed depth to the Swansea midfield.

Oli McBurnie has done a magnificent job up top for Swansea netting four times, and Courtney Baker-Richardson has also given Potter a different dimension up top.

However, with question marks hanging over Wilfried Bony's future at the club, perhaps another striker is needed to give the Swans that added boost.

Leo Bonatini could be that man - he has started just twice for Wolves this season and has the ability to be a clinical goalscorer in this division.
