Bolton Wanderers are enduring a frustrating time of late in the Championship, as off-the-pitch matters also seem to worsen week by week.

Phil Parkinson's men got off to a superb start this season, going unbeaten in their opening four league games winning three of them, however, this joy was short lived as Phil Parkinson’s side have won one game in their last eight matches.

The Trotters slipped to 16th in the table and fans will now be expecting a relegation-threatened season once again, after surviving by the skin of their teeth last term.

Parkinson and his side travel to fellow relegation strugglers Rotherham United next week in what will prove to be a crucial game, despite it being the early stages of the Championship season.

With the January transfer window drawing ever closer, Bolton may need some new additions in order to make them a stronger outfit come the latter stages of the season, however with funds limited, the free-agent market may be of interest to Parkinson.

Here, we take a look at five players that should be on Bolton's January transfer wish-list...

Steven Caulker should be the first player on Parkinson's wish-list.

The 26-year old has been without a club following his departure from Dundee, and would be a fantastic acquisition for Bolton.

Russell Martin's nine-year stint at Norwich City came to an end at the end of last season, and the centre-half still has a lot to offer at this level.

The 32-year old would add stability and leadership to a back-line that has conceded 15 goals thus far this term.

Glen Johnson is another player who has been without a club since his departure from Stoke City last term.

The 34-year old would be another ageing player, however his experience and quality would still be of interest to Bolton and Phil Parkinson.

Everton have recently listed some of their youngsters for loan, and former Nottingham Forest midfielder Kieran Dowell could be a fantastic signing for the Trotters.

The 21-year old netted nine times for Forest last term, and could be a fantastic player in behind the likes of Josh Magennis.

Liam Bridcutt is expected to leave Nottingham Forest in January after making just three appearances this season.

The 29-year old would be a solid addition for any Championship team, and Parkinson should look to get him at a cut-price in January.
